Default New wheel and tire checklist

I hoping this can be a information thread to help others as well as me. Ive done some searching but like always cant find that exact answer i need. Im Putting new wheels and tires on with my tax refund probably in the next couple weeks. There seems like there is so much to do with this process! TPMS sensors, transmission reprogramming, traction control light issues? I have a 11 5.0 fx4 level with AAL. Putting a 18x9 xd with 295 70 18 trail grappler on (34.5). Whats the checklist to get everything done properly and coming out with no issues on this. First time ever putting wheels and bigger tires on a truck especially with all the technology in the late models.

Also what should i do if i want to have my sensorless stock wheels for winter time? Deal with the tpms light through the winter?

Thanks guys for hopefully clearing this up for me.

I have sensors for my winter wheels as well as summer. They are not all that expensive. That way you dont have to look at the idiot light all winter long. Up here in Canada the tire dealers are not permitted to put tires on rims without sensors if the vehicle came equiped with factory tpms. I am not sure how it is where you live. A tuner will look after your tire size adjustment if you plan on or have a tuner. Your other option would be to have the dealer reprogram your truck with the new tire size. That could be a hassle and expense though. You could also get a Hypertech speedometer calibrator as an option.

It kinda depends upon your being-**** tolerance.

Can you live with a (or a piece of tape over it) ?
If not ... Get and install a set of TPMS in your winter set-up. In the long run it's less expensive than swapping 'em with the change of the season and/or risking the chance of damaging a unit in the process.
Speedometer recalibration ...
In your case the speedo' would be slow by 6.8%. MEANING: A reading of 60MPH would actually be 64.1MPH. Also means that your odometer would be off.

Tool: Tire Size Calculator ««« -click-

Recalibration would mean a visit to the dealer for an ECM flash -OR- purchasing a hand-held tuner to accomplish the same task. *And YES, I know that there are speed-dial speedometer adjustment units. i.e. Ford Racing Performance Parts part # M-4209ADPT-A
Am currently going thru this for my 2011 FX4 (and have in the past for several other vehicles) and have opted for ...
  • inexpensive OEM TPMS from ebaY® ($50 for a set).
    .
  • 33" diameter wheel (17"x8½" Raptor rims with Firestone 285/70x17). *The difference is 2% and I can live with that.

In addition to the tire size calculator above, my suite of other tools ...
  • TireRack.com » Search for Tires by Size <<<<< -click- Enter the tire size information.
Review the search results » Additional Tire Information » Specs » Rim Width Range
*Remember ... The sidewalls may be wider than the rims.
    .
  • Rim / Tire Size Comparator ««« -click-
    .
  • measure your wheel wells. i.e. frontspacing, backspacing, width, etc.
    .
  • And for your listening pleasure and visual edification ...

Do your homework. Nobody said it was going to be easy.

Well said. What about reprogramming the sensors back and forth from winter to summer set. Assuming both sets of sensors cant be mated to the truck at the same time.

I talked to my friend who owns the dealership where I bought my truck and he said they can make adjustments on the computer to adjust for the tire size up to a certain size. He isn't real sure what the max size is. I'm assuming its probably close to what 315/70R17 size of the Raptors.

fx4f-150 ... What about reprogramming the sensors back and forth from winter to summer set.
Only have 4 seasonal swapping experiences, however, reprogramming / resetting / retraining hasn't been an issue. One time the TPMS went-off and all that was necessary was to drop 5Lbs from each of the wheels that I had just installed and re-air 'em up. Light went-out. Then there's always the re-set procedure in the owner's manual ...

Assuming both sets of sensors cant be mated to the truck at the same time.
It's just that when initializing or resetting/retraining them, they can't be in close proximity (according to the owner's manual less than 3' apart). Probably the same is true for storing the off-season set.

That's what I've heard as well ... 34"-35" diameter.

My buddy that works at a dealership had a idea that he has seen on some of the lifted trucks that come in. He said take a sealed pcv pipe and put the sensors in it and pressurize the pipe to the correct reading. Then mount it somewhere on the truck. Never have to buy sensors or worry about tagging them to the truck. Sounds ghetto but actually seems like a good idea.
