Default New truck...brake controller dilemma

I've ordered a 2013 STX rcsb 5.0. It comes in this week. The brake controller is not available on the order sheet for the STX this year. Only on the XL and XLT.

The dealer can install an aftermarket one for $125, or install the factory one (and the required re-program) for $350.

Recommendations? I may never use it, but one of my boat projects does have brakes on the trailer. I figure its better, warranty-wise, for it to be put on at time of purchase.

Thanks,
Craig

Aftermarket $125. I have a DrawTite Break Controller and works great.

You can get a really good one for the price they are wanting for an OE.

I have the factory one on my XLT and I love it. No silly wires and clunky eyesore box under the dash. It works very well and is positioned in an easy to operate location. I believe it would be worth the extra cash to get the factory controller. That's not to say the aftermarket one would be bad if the factory one is not within your budget. Either one would be fine.

In my opinion, if you are even the slightest bit technically gifted (own a drill, can crimp wires) then buy a controller yourself and install it. I bought a Tekonsha P3, which was recommend to me by friends and had great reviews on Amazon. My truck came with an adapter (2010 XLT w/ Towing Package), which I crimped using the crimps that came with the controller, and plugged it in. The harness is right underneath the plastic panel under the steering column. It is secured into a plug, which you just pull out. Very easy.

I then screwed the mount in by where your right knee is when you are driving.

I can upload some pictures if you want.

Here is the controller:

Thanks for the input! I'm going to look at the truck by Saturday - as soon as it gets off-loaded.

You mention a boat trailer. vey few if any boat trailers use electric brakes. some larger high end trailers use electric over hydraulic but most have surge brakes [ no controller required] that being said some after market controlers are good BUT they don't come close to the oem ford unit.

The Ford unit will also integrate the trailer into the trucks stability and sway control. From reviews I've read by guys using both, there is no comparison and 100% of them say get the OEM unit.
But that dealer's price sounds very high. the prices I've seen are all under $200 and if buying a new truck that includes the install and flash. Maybe the STX doesn't have a factory harness installed? I'd call another dealer to price check.

If the dealer is offering to install the factory controller for $350, I say buy and install one yourself. You can get a new factory controller online for about $125 and most dealers will turn them on for about $50. A factory integrated controller is going to be better than the best after market controller.

Does your new truck have the tow package? If not, that's probably the reason it's $350. If you do have the tow package, The OEM controller is around $160 from Tascaparts.com and it's very easy to install. Takes ten minutes, then have the dealer do the flash for @ 1/2 hr labor charge.

I also have a 2013 STX with tow package, I am confused as to which OEM brake controller part number to purchase. BL3Z-19H332-AA or BL3Z-2C006-AA?

Thank you,

Ron
