Is that the contacts under the plastic cover on the sliding glass portion?

Yes, I could feel the contacts with the cardboard. My defroster has since stopped working...When I press the plastic cover rearwards and someone else presses the dash button, it works momentarily, but then will stop working. I didn't want to start taking it apart as my warranty is still good, and didn't want them to say I was tampering. Only got 16k on it. I should bring it in before 36k. It's such a pain leaving it, hope the replacement is better engineered....sorry for not being much help...

What kind of extended warranty do you have? I have Ford's premium care warranty and Ford will not warranty my rear defrosters. Dealer wants $900 to replace rear window. Which Ford dealer did you take it to?

I thought the bumper to bumper is for 3 years 36k miles. It better be covered under that.

PremiumCare will cover it. If they run it under the glass base part number it will not be covered. If they run coverage under the base for the heated grid (H42006) it will be covered.

^^^^ what cjcnomor4 said. The glass is not covered, but the defrosting grid is. They will need to code it as such. If you have issues, call the Ford CARE number and discuss it with them.

I have premium care, $100 deductible and was covered as an inoperable rear defroster. My dealer is All American Ford, Old Bridge, NJ. It must be coded as that, not glass breakage or glass problem. My glass was not broken.

When was the warranty work performed? The dealer told me that Ford use to warranty it, but then stopped doing so.

Did you have your rear window replaced? When was the warranty work performed? The dealer told me that Ford use to warranty it, but then stopped doing so.
