New idea for after market backup camera
I'm the type of person that obsesses about the littlest things. Lately I have got my mind set on adding a back up camera to my xlt. I don't want to go with the emblem camera and mirror because it's expensive and I'll have to replace a body harness and headliner harness. I don't want to use back up sensors because I don't want to drill into my bumper. So.... I'm thinking that I will remove the spare tire lock and replace it with a camera that will fit within the whole. Then power the camera from the towing via reverse lights power wire. I would assume there will be one. Then all I have to do is run an RCA to the cab where I will have a small 3.5'' monitor mounted somewhere out of the way. It too will be powered by the reverse lights. Assuming I can find the correct wire within one of the kick panels.
What do you think? Think it will work?
I'll try and find a picture to explain what type of camera and monitor I mean.

I'm thinking I could mount the screen in the sunglasses drop down. Also the mirror is $300 and a 3.5 screen is $25. I'm poor right now otherwise I would buy the OEM setup

I have one that mounts on the license plate frame, then I wired it to the reverse lights. It tilts to different angles. The screen mounts on your windshield, or vents, and you can turn the parking aid on or off.
It seems that some moisture got into the camera though as there are two spots I cannot get rid of.

It will work, I basically did the same thing with the emblem camera and mirror. Wired the camera into the trailer tow reverse wire, ran video wire that I bought at radio shack from the camera with a wire from the reverse wire along the frame to the cab and made the connections to the mirror. So instead of looking for a power source in the cab I just ran one from the back. The mirror connection was a little tricky but I figured it out.

There used to be a product called Snake Eyes that would replace drop down mirror but I don't see them anymore.
But all told, aren't the guys using OEM parts doing this upgrade for about $350. That's the price you mentioned above. I might be wrong; I didn't read the entire thread.

Aftermarket Rear Camera
This is how I installed a Peak wireless camera in My XLT. (wireless from truck bed & cab) It has worked with no problems for over a year now I used a license plate camera that I sealed with silicone and have had no problems with water. Total cost was about $100.
