New here, looking into 11-14’ F-150s
New member here not new to Ford. Currently own a 3rd gen 5.4L Expedition and it’s a great truck. While I do not plan on getting rid of my expy i am looking for a newer “primary” vehicle of sorts and I’m thinking I want a used pickup of this generation. Mainly interested in the 3.5 EcoBoost and 6.2L V8 engines. Can’t say I can rule out a 5.0 if it’s the right truck. I’ve driven them all at one point or another and I have to say I’m leaning toward the 6.2L, fuel economy is nothing to write home about but that’s not much concern here. Seems the hardest part is actually finding one with the big engine! A lot easier to find the EcoBoost ones. Seems it’s rare on XLT/FX4 and more common with platinum and limited trims. Are the EcoBoost and 6.2 engines relatively reliable? Common problems? Opinions? How do both handle towing? The 5.4L with the 6 speed performs very well in this respect. Apologize if this is not the right section for guidance.

You'll get plenty of answers, but search around here, there's been seemingly endless discussion of that exact question about engines. Plenty to read without waiting for this thread. People won't like this, but in order of reliability:
6.2
5.0
3.5eb
6.2
5.0
3.5eb

I have personally seen and owned 6.2s and 5.0s with 200,000, 300,000, and 400,000 miles. They are bulletproof engines especially the 6.2L. The ecoboost was pushed by Ford to the market to satisfy the hippies and while it gets 1 MPG better than the V8, it will not last. Biggest flaw of the eco is the timing chain which stretches and starts to rattle, frequent spark plugs changes, misfires, various oil leaks, etc. I have personally experienced all of these issues on my trucks. The power delivery is amazing on the eco, however.
Get a V8 and be worry free, or get yourself an eco and start the timer. If it wasn't for Ford's blatant false advertising and pushing dealerships to order the ecoboost, you would see a lot more used V8s.
Check this thread out and tell me you want to own one of these: https://www.f150forum.com/f70/2011-e...04007/index12/

I guess I’ll hold out for the big engine, harder to find but I do see them around esp in Platinums and Harley’s. Don’t mind driving out of the way for the right one.

Saying the ecoboost won't last is a baseless claim. We're reaching the point right now where you're starting to see high mileage ecoboosts show up. While I'd agree they might tend to be less reliable than the V8's, that IS NOT to say they are unreliable. Ford did their homework with this engine. Tree huggers and EPA aside, Ford knows if the ecoboosts start getting a reputation as a short life engine they will lose sales to GM/RAM/Nissan/Toyota and they won't let that happen.
As far as towing, all three engine choices should outperform your 5.4. Don't get hung up on the lower displacement of the 5.0, it'll leave your 5.4 in the dust as its a much more modern engine.

Not true. 6.2 was available XLT upwards. Very few were ever requested, though. While shopping, I think I've seen nothing but Platinums. And Raptor, but I'm assuming we're just ignoring the obvious.

Ah yes, looks like that may be correct. Looking over the F150 brochures through the different model years, it looks like the XLT only had the 6.2 as an option in '13 and '14, so not the prior years. Interestingly enough the '14 model year does not list the King Ranch having the option of the 6.2L.

Personally I would hold out for a 6.2, but they're all great and only buy a 13 or 14
Ecoboost, if the timing chain hasn't been replaced with proof. Knock a couple grand off and take it. After the timing chain they're basically amazing. I have 105,000 with no issues, no ticking ( knock on wood )
5.0 If it don't knock take it, too.
