Default New guy here wanting to know about your mileage

Hello fellas! I have been in the diesel scene for about the last 8 years. I just got rid of my old Goat oil burner and got me a 2013 5.0 fx4. So far Ive done a magnaflow exhaust, airaid CAI, and an SCT tuner. Truck runs great and has tons of power. Im curious what kind of mileage you guys are getting out of these trucks? My suspension is stock for now but have a 2" leveling kit and 35's coming soon. I hand calculated my mileage yesterday and I got just over 12 mpg on that tank, mixed town and highway. I have been running the 93 octane tune so far but if the mileage is going to be like this im going to bump it down to a softer tune. The truck has 3.55 rear gear so Im not sure why the mileage is so poor. Its not like Im driving it like a race car. Ive got a 600 hp mustang for that. Your thoughts and comments appreciated.

All stock FX4 scab, with the same gearing, and 6,000 miles. I typically get 15/16 around town, and 18 on the highway. I fill it with 87.
Do you remember what you were getting before the mods?

13 fx4 with 3.73 crew cab. Lifetime average 13.5mpg. It's all terrible man. Those 35s will out you down even more lol.

My 2013 (see sig for specs) is getting a pretty steady 19mpg, hand calculated. Its all stock except for a CAI. I don't baby the truck but I do a lot of smooth highway and back roads cruising.

Any sort of modification to the stance of the truck like a leveling or a lift kit will hurt mileage. Those 35's won't do you any favors either. The general rule of thumb is you can have decent fuel economy (for a truck) OR you can have a modified truck, you can't have both....unless maybe your running a completely stock stance with an economy tune.

Last year when I had my '11 Lariat 4x4 with a 5.0 and 3.55's I averaged 18.1 on a 2,600+ mile round trip to Delaware from SE Louisiana...Not bad for having a 2 inch level and P275x60x20 Toyo's. Truck was loaded with close to 1K pound's including passenger's.

Just went over 6K miles in my XLT (see sig), lifetime mileage is 17.3 MPG but keeps improving as the engine gets broken in. Averaging around 18 per tank of late on 87 octane.

60 percent highway miles, maybe a little more and I drive with a light foot for the most part.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not sure how accurate the fuel eco is on the dash but its all over the place. I drive the same all the time and one trip to work going down the highway it'll be reading 17ish, then the next trip it'll be reading 14ish. I never hand calculated it when it was bone stock cause it didn't stay that way for long, but every other vehicle I've done programmer, cold air and exhaust on the mileage has increased. I know Its a 4x4 and I will never see the mileage I saw with my diesel, but at this point it doesn't get any better than my 2010 expedition 5.4L.

my 5.0 does not get its best mileage to the transmission get fully warmed up. its takes twice as long as it takes the engine to warm up. i guess i got lucky with my truck, my mpgs hand caculated come within less than 1/2 mpg of the read out on dash. at about 8k miles my truck started getting mpg, i have a 4wd Screw. having a 36 gallon tank i have never had a chance to just check hiway versus in town, always a mix. my lifetime is a little over 18 and creeping up, maybe my tonneau cover i put on recently or just loosening up. i run 87 octane and buy the name brand gas, my mpgs drop if i run Walmart gas.

Maybe Ill drop the tune and run a lower octane fuel and see what that does. Sure seems that it would get better with the higher octane though, since they are supposed to run more effeciantly with the higher octane.
