I just put the 275/55/R20s on my rims today. After they were placed on my stock 20 inch rims I immediately noticed that there was quite a deep lip at the edge of the rim where it meets the tire. I have added a few photos to help show what I'm talking about. I personally haven't seen tires and rims look like this. I check out a lot of trucks and rims on the street and this just looks weird. To me they just look like they aren't the right fit and that they aren't going to protect the rim the way that they should. I also just want to know that they are in fact safe.
I was thinking of taking then back (as the owner of the tire shop said that I could if I wasn't pleased) and exchanging them for the 285/65/R20 - however, when I looked at the photos of your 285/65/R20 tires on the same rims as me I still see the same lip exposed. Mine might be slightly larger than yours. Did you think the same thing once yours were mounted?
Also, would the 65 vs the 55 cause any transmission shifting issues due to the larger diameter? I already have some trans issues (not often) as the truck seems to lock and jolt during gear changes (I think more downshifting)

That looks terrible. I wonder if that's just the design of the ford 20s and how the tire seats on those rims. Does anybody have these mounted yet on 18s? I know it has no bearing on the functionality of the tire, but if im paying $1200 for tires, I don't want them to look like that.
even in the pics that the OP posted it looks like the lip is poking out a little. could just be the design of those chrome 20's. i wonder how these tires will look with my fx4 wheels..
Little update, called around to a few different shops. Getting the 285/65/20 BFG KO2 installed tomorrow along with my 1.5" leveling kit. Will get pics as soon as I get the truck back.

You are correct. The All Terrain T/A KO2 does not have a rim protector. The engineers determined it wouldn't be necessary with the design of this tire.

Awesome. Time for the pics. For those wondering the mods are same as the OP's. 285/65/20 BFG A/T KO2 with an AS 1.5" front level only.
And for those of you wondering how this fits with the rim? its fine. That issue with the lip Ford_Man_1000 is having is because of the way the rim is designed. The tire sits perfectly on my FX4 wheel.
