New 2014 STX - Biggest Complaint, How many others?
 

Recently purchased a new STX regular cab 3.7 truck, and I love the truck so far. However, I had the biggest disappointment today when I did the first oil change. The plastic catch-pan / diverter under the oil filter is an absolute joke. I am sure it looked good on the design board, but I think Ford must have missed testing it. My truck was parked on level ground and not one drop flowed down the funnel/diverter portion of the catch-pan. All of the oil ran toward the back of the catch-pan and over the edge and on to my concrete parking pad. It must have taken me an hour or more to clean-up the concrete. No oil change should ever be this messy!! Anybody else experience this?

Welcome to the forums. I change my own oil and have for years, it's always a messy situation. I have a oversized oil catch pan and pieces of cardboard on the ground to lay on and help with the mess. I don't have your engine but they're all similar, I've done it with my old 04 5.4l and now with my 4.6l 3v. But it sure beats paying a crap load when you can do it yourself for half the price.

I was told if you put it the front end up on ramps or blocks, it works well. But I agree it should work in the first place.

Yeah oil change is fun.
Not sure the engine differences hopefully the 3.7 has a better filter location than the Eco.
Third oil change I started using disposable shop towels to force the oil to drain where I want.

I have changed my own oil on every jeep/truck I have owned,since the f150 (2014 STX 5.0) I have the dealer do it ( only 5k miles ) and have changed twice,first was free at 2k miles,before I left for my 2k mile trip pulling a car/trailer, then again at 4k,after arriving,I think I'll continue having the dealer do it, price isn't too bad, no mess, and if there's ever a motor related issue..guess who's taking responsibility

I used to do my own oil changes on all vehicles I owned. Now I have dealer do it for me. It only cost about 15 dollars more and I don't have to crawl under there and get messy lol.

Yeah and don't ever take it to Jiffy Lube....you ever see those guys?...seriously, "paper or plastic"!?
If the dealership has competitive prices I use them,.if not do it yourself.

It is deceiving at first glance but the catch tray is designed to flow out the back. There is a spout on the back of the tray that it comes out of, the front one is an overflow. I did the same thing the 1st time I changed mine, now no mess

It is a retarded design that could have been done so much simpler. Even if the truck is inclined and it all pours out the rear funnel, you still have to waste a bunch of time and shop towels wiping down the surface directly below the oil filter.

$40 for a full service at the dealer :whistling2:
