That locks the rear end...it will stay locked until you exceed a certain speed, which is 35 km/hr, I think???

If you have a **** that pulls out it means you have an electronic locking rear axle. You can lock your rear axle at will. Normally you have limited slip which means the wheels only lock if one starts spinning. Don't lock it and then drive around town on dry pavement. It won't handle as good. It's for getting out of sticky situations or putting a boat in the water ect without having to use 4x4. Also not to be a dick but the first thing I did when I bought my truck was spend a few hours reading the owners manual to familiarize myself with all the features. You should do this.

Something like that. It's only needed on areas with poor traction (beaches, snow, etc.).

Here in north Ohio, I've only needed 4x4 + E-locker when going through 8" of snow on unplowed streets.

Try this:

I was in your position a few months back. Youtube has some great videos demonstrating the differences and use of differentials.

EDIT: One more good video:

Your truck has an open differential unless you lock the rear end.

The electronic-locking rear differential, when engaged, locks the rear axle completely to provide enhanced traction at both rear wheels at the same time. The electronic-locking rear differential is fully integrated with the AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ (RSC®) system to deliver excellent control when traveling on- or off-road.
Per the Ford website.

Also this.

This is for Jeeps, but is kind of funny and helps with understanding the differences in more detail. Also, a decent looking chick with a nice jeep.
