Default Need torque converter help!

Hey all,

Today I think my torque converter kicked the bucket. Loud whirring sound that matches the engine, and sometimes locks up, sometimes doesn't. I have a 2009 F-150 with the 4.6l 3v and the 6R80. Would anyone know the exact part number I would need to order? I've seen a few online but all different part numbers. Aby help would be appreciated, Thanks!

It's been quite a while since I've done much tranny work but I would be stunned if all you need is a torque converter. When you say it doesn't always look up, is that the high gear steady speed highway lock up or will it not pull itself at all. There is programing involved through the tranny to make it lock up. if you have enough miles on it to be worn out there's a lot of other stuff wore out also. If you want to do the work your self look for a shop that will sell you a rebuilt unit and swap it out.

Yesterday while driving I started to hear a whirring sound that would match intensity with my RPMs. It would still drive fine for a little, and at every stop light on the way home, It would wouldn’t move when I would start from a start, jerk then start going. It would get worse and worse until it barely locks up to start moving now. Even when it would lock up it would shift fine. I also have codes for for TQ clutch circuit. I’ll definitely go take a look at some shops. I was thinking thinking it might be a little cheaper to get the part before hand.

I hate to say it but you might be best to pay for some diagnostics and then decide what to do. The torque converter won't work on and off, with out tranny issues causing it.

My 2012 threw a code for a Torque Convertor solenoid lockup fail or something similar. It was the beginning of the end for my tranny. It started getting hot and then making some really strange noises in 5th. Led to a complete rebuild (that was bad) and eventually a completely different tranny being installed.

If your TC is bad...the rest of your tranny is more than likely toast as well.
