Need opinions on 2013 F150 5.0 engine noise.
So I have noticed an intermittent tapping noise on my 2013, 5.0 40,000 km's , it generally does not occur from a completely cold start, but rather occurs when the truck has been driven to operating temperature and then parked for about an hour or two, then upon starting the following time with residual heat still in the block and what have you the noise occurs. Here is a clip of the noise,
I noticed it sounds pretty much identical to Robbgt 's video from the following link
The noise disappears after about 30 seconds or so, i scoped cylinder 3 and this is the only thing i noticed
did a compression test and it came out fine, close to 120 psi, so i'm not really sure what to think at this point. I changed the oil within the past 500 km's which i have read that some users have noticed a noise emerge following oil changes. I'm thinking ill send the oil to a lab the following oil change just to be certain im not sitting on a ticking time bomb, but i would really appreciate some insight from any of you, thanks in advance.

Sounds like mine. I had mine fixed @ 25k miles under warranty. They replaced the cam phasers. resolved the ticking until now when at around 55k it has started again. The first time was only at operating temp, now its right before operating temp but after it has warmed up for a few minutes. Is still quiet at temp. Let me know when you figure it out or have it fixed.
Edit: actually mine sounds much different now that I got the videos to play. Mine is a much more regular tapping and isn't so loud. maybe this is the oblong cylinder issue.

I had a 2005 5.0. It had the tapping sound.
Everyone always would ask if I hear the tapping, I'd say yes.
I read it isn't a problem until it is a problem.
One day the tapping got significantly louder.
I traded it in and was fortunate enough to find a 2013 with a 3.5.

Im just trying to decide whether ill hold onto it or sell it and put it towards a 2019, i have been really eyeing up some regular cabs that i would be able to fit the dirty bikes in with the tailgate up, i would still have access to my Girlfriends 4 door if i needed the extra seats. They just look so damn clean, my dream would be to slap a whipple on one of em... but i was planning on giving this truck to my mom to replace her 07, but i don't want to hand her down a lemon if the motor isn't going to last..

I’m told it’s an injector, mine does it hot, all the time. (2013 5.0, 40k miles)
Its a “feature” not a problem, it lets me know the engine is running.
(I own 3 other vehicles, none tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, one has 160k miles, no tapping)
Its very important to know my engine is running in McD’s drive through where it’s very noticeable ;-)
ps, I went with 10-30 oil, still tapping.
my 1995 300ci I6 was very quite at 125k miles, I miss it.

I've been told by many mechanics involved in racing that all of the Ford Modular engines benefit from a pre-lube system. Not to be confused with a pre-oiler. A pre-lube creates oil pressure before the engine starts. There are a lot of benefits from using 20 weight oil but one disadvantage is how easily the thin oil succumbs to gravity and drains. Not much is harder on an engine than starting with no oil pressure.
I have no idea if this has anything to do with your problem but I wouldn't rule out this as the root cause of the noise you're hearing.

I can't help but lol at all these "normal" noises. Ford can pound sand for not figuring out these issues and taking care of their customers. In no way shape or form should any engine in this century be characterized as normal if it exhibits noise issues and you can't identify the noise without a doubt. Purely big business screwing the consumer. Sorry I'm finished ranting.
