I thought it was a combination of suspension, wheels and tires.. Makes the limited a better way to get your family to the mall but not so good for using the half ton truck as a 3/4 ton tow vehicle...
BTW - max tow does not come with LT tires either...wish it did. Only the HD payload F150 comes with LT tires. Well that and the Raptor.

The AWD drive system has no bearing on tow rating, it has to be the wheels, I can't seem to find any other info to credit or discredit that claim though. Sucks, if that's the case, I may have to buy new wheels.

I don't know if you have read this yet or not. I have a friend with a 2011 Limited and was under the same impression. Everything points to the tire size, but there must be more to it.

It's AWD, 4 HI and 4 LOW and the AWD activates when the rear tires lose traction. Unless you have a very rare front wheel drive F-150.
The AWD drive system has no bearing on tow rating, it has to be the wheels, I can't seem to find any other info to credit or discredit that claim though. Sucks, if that's the case, I may have to buy new wheels.
