Good news.

The first dealer I took it to didn't notice noise but they noticed misfires, as I said before.

I took it to the dealer i bought it from (used car dealer - not a ford one) to have them fix the misfires. Well my dad did because I'm too young to drive the rental car back. Anyway, I don't believe he mentioned the noise because we didn't think there was much they could do.

Well they replaced the plugs and wires but didn't get any codes (neither did I on my dad's scanner) and the mechanic noticed a noise on startup. The place I bought it from said there is a ford dealer in Mass where I bought my truck from (I live in RI) and they said they will be taking care of me. Within the next month anyway (apparently ford dealerships are only allowed certain amount of warranty work a month i guess? the dealer I went to originally was a big one so maybe they passed their limit - i don't know).

Anyway, this is great news for me. He didn't say what the noise was, but they know there is one and the dealer will be taking care of it. Will keep you guys updated.

This problem is deeper than that. I believe it's cylinder bore distortion. Dealer just changed my spark plugs the other day, didn't mention their condition. Noise still persists. They are dropping it off at a Ford dealership on Saturday and having a Ford engineer come and diagnose it.

This^^

Also, piston slap typical is a knock on cold start only and as heat/things expand, goes away at operation temps (remember/think about the old 3.1 V6 GM motors that GM put in everything?).Most of those had piston slap right from the factory.
The cylinder bore distortion typically is whisper quiet on cold start, but starts knocking once operating temps are reached.
In most cases piston slap or cylinder bore distortion is not detrimental to the motor, but that doesn't make it right.

Update to this thread. I had my truck back at the dealer that originally heard the knock. My truck was knocking consistently as it would start to warm up. They diagnosed it after about a week of trying and following Ford hotline instructions and a New oem short block was approved and ordered. Appears I was right and it was around #2 and #3 cylinders. This process took some time but it was the right diagnosis and I now have it back running perfect, strong and smooth. They installed some more new parts such as timing chain tensioners to that area. They did a awesome job keeping it and checking everything before they gave it back to me and i was covered with a new F150 to drive while the job was underway. This took about a month from start to finish. under the hood looks perfect. I could not be pleased more and will give my dealer a perfect score on a survey. I am so very thankful to them and Ford for coming through. Truck sounds like new and i have that very faint tick that all have but not loud like it was, so normal to me. No leaks!

50k miles and your truck looks like that? It was ran hard, that's for sure. How much did you pay for it? Dealer hosed you if you paid anything above mid 20s. I would have shipped you a 2014 Platinum with half those miles for $25k.

Ford quietly redesigned the 5L for 2016. Not much of anything is interchangeable between the 2. Wonder why?
