Nice pull!
There was a safety bulletin going around work around this exact situation (attaching rigging to a tow ball). It came from a gas company in western Canada IRC where while trying to recover an f250 that was bogged down in a field with another pickup, the ball broke off of one of the trucks launching it into the cab. One of the guys was struck by the ball and ended up in the hospital with serious head injuries.
Not trying to knock your pull, I just wanted to confirm what others have said about it being dangerous to hook up to a tow ball.

I think the chain is okay, because it doesn't store up energy like a strap. It's always smart to lay something like a heavy blanket across a strap in case it snaps and flies back. If you Google it, you can find stories and (sadly) videos of people getting killed from snapped straps. For the OP, I'm glad everything worked out. Well done!
You are 100% correct about weighting the line, ALWAYS put something to weigh down the line so if it snaps the energy will be deflected down into the ground.

As someone who has been guilty of doing stupid dangerous things I say good show!
A little luck good a long way. Hell I've been party to using 3 tractors, a block and tackle, and 1" cable trying to pull out a stuck cotton picker when the cable snapped.
But we got it out, and I won't do that again! And I bet you never use the ball to do a recovery again either! Life lessons!

Makes me proud of my F150 that it has the capability to do that. That was a hell of pull man. nice.

Incredibly stupid to pull it out using a trailer ball. Those have been known to fail as they are not designed to take the kind of loads placed on them in a situation like that. When they break lose under so much stress they would punch a hole in a human without slowing down, then smash through whatever is behind the unlucky person. It literally turns into a 2-5lb cannon ball.

Just someone who doesn't read previous posts and wants to puff up his ego by sounding like a know it all. When we all know he doesn't know it all. Typical keyboard cowboy crap. Snooze.

I have one question. In the beginning of the video there is a red truck in front of the black truck. There is a strap connecting the red and black trucks. Then magically the red truck is gone. The semi is pulled out. Then at the very end of the video you can see a red tail gate I front of the black truck. I call BS. So how many trucks did it take to pull out the semi??
