Fair enough... the next thing I wonder about is how the glare is coming off these 11 inch glossy tablet displays in sunlight?

What I love about the iPad over a headunit is if you have Nav that sucks your not locked down to one provider. There are tons of Nav apps.
Some head units do some things better than others... This way you get the best of all worlds!!?

Pretty good option outside of using a RAM mount or the intense labor involved in some of the permanent installs you can find on this site. I use an iPad holder behind the front passenger headrest to show movies to my boy, and then slide the iPad into the rear seat pocket when I'm out somewhere.

the ipad sreen is pretty good about glare.. you can use your ipad outdoors without being blinded right? plus inside the dash you rarely will have an instance where sunlight is hitting it at the right angle.. you'll get more glare from the chrome trim on the AC vents than the ipad ha

Yeah I don't really have a glare issue with mine...maybe a little from the windows but nothing intrusive..as you can see here:
But I had an idea inspired by your idea..
I wonder If one could rig up something that retracts into that little tray in front of the screen like this? Slide down James Bond style..when it's up it would look like this (with the stock radio controls there of course..)
Then it simply retracts down and you put the rubber mat in place of it..stealth.

Retired and loving it!
That looks pretty good, and as long as it is secure and works for you, more power to you......I only ask that you be parked or stopped before using it, you know?
