Default My 4x4 is acting all kinds of crazy.......

2014 F-150 XLT, 5.0L, SCREW, 4x4

Today, I hauled some landscaping blacks into my yard. I was using 4x4 low, with the ELR locked in. It was acting normal in my yard while in use. I pulled uphill into my driveway, shut off the ELR, and switched from 4x4 low into 4x2 (I usually go lo-hi-2, but I rolled the switch too hard). When I did this, I got the usual 'shift to N' message. Then, I quickly got a 'shift delayed-pull forward' message. Suddenly,my front end starting making a hideous, very loud, grinding noise. It jerked and popped, then went into 4x4 hi. I then got the 'check 4x4' message. I was out of driveway before it would go into 4x2. I drove up the highway a bit, and it didn't go 4x2 until I backed up. I drove back to my driveway and tried to go 4x4 high again. It immediately turned in the 'check 4x4' message, and wouldn't go into 4x4 high. I went back to 4x2 successfully and parked it.

Tonight, I took it for a quick spin to see if it was still misbehaving after being shut off. It drove normally in 4x2. I went 4x4 low successfully in my driveway, and it shifted out of 4x4 low into 4x4 high successfully. I then tried to go 4x2. When going from N to D in 4x4 high, then truck would rev, but not move. The speedometer spun up to about 60 mph with no movement. I went back and forth from 4x4 lo to hi to 4x2 a couple times, and it finally popped a bunch and went into 4x2. It smoothly went into my garage after that.

It's under warranty (only about 23k miles), and will be going to the dealer ASAP. I'm not going to try any troubleshooting since it's under warranty.

Has anyone had this issue? Anybody wanna guess what's up with it?

Sounds like the hubs went as you transitioned from yard to driveway. Were you spinning at all?

No spinning; everything was normal while I was in 4x4 low.

I had a similar episode this weekend. I have same truck in 2013 with 37k miles. I used 4x4 low to pull my tractor up on to a trailer to take it in to be worked on. After, I switched from 4x4 low to 4x4 high and the switch seemed to take place. When I went from N to D, it wouldn't go, and would only rev. I switched from D to P and back to D. A grinding and loud clunk from the front and it would drive, but when I tried to switch from 4x4 high to 4x2, it wouldn't switch and the dash said 'check 4x4'. I tried going into 4x4 low and back to high in N, and it worked. I reversed a few times and finally it went from 4x4 high to 4x2. Taking it in tomorrow. About 8k miles ago, I had similar issues using 4x4 Low. Dealer found loose electrical connection to 4x4 system and it has been working fine until this past weekend.

I got it back from the dealer today! It worked normally for them. They said it showed a history of code P184a, which they said means the electric motor was sticking. I tried it out tonight and it worked normally. I have plenty of warranty time left, so I'm just gonna drive it and not worry about it much for now.

Hey aswrg7 and argrin,

I'm happy to hear that your dealers were able to get this squared away. Let me know if you experience further concerns; you can find me here.

Figured I could piggyback on this thread since you guys have solved a similar issue. I have a 2014 f150 4x4 5.0. Everything was working when I used it 6 months ago. I just installed a 2.5 inch motofab leveling kit. Front and rear.

Upon completion I tested 4hi, still works. 4 low, foot on brake ,says shift to neutral. Do that and changes to shift to drive. I do and try to move forward and engine revs, front wheels making a grinding sound, mph goes up but I'm not moving. Electric shift motor? All of the sudden?

I tested vacuum lines for iwe's. Hold vacuum at hub. Pull vacuum from solenoid 22-23 psi in 2wd. Switch to 4hi it goes to zero so it reads as those are okay. It seems like rear wheels are not getting power in 4 low. Maybe 4hi too but I have to jack whole truck up for that.

Forgot to mention but it will eventually grab when motor winds down and I can move forward. Took a little to get back to 2 wheel drive also.
