I actually siliconed a piece of sheet metal over the hole and covered it with duct tape haha. It held perfectly fine for about 500 miles until I finally got around to changing the cover. I have no doubt that it would have lasted the life of the truck haha.

We have 7.3's with over 400k,
6.0's with over 300k,
5.4's with over 300k,
4.6's with over 300k,
Taurus' with over 200k,
Explorers with over 250k,
we don't have many 6.4's but I'm sure they are still up there.
And of recently the 6.7's are in the 200k range.
But overall the 6.0's are GARBAGE, I can't say that enough. If you own one and actually use it you WILL be doing heads and EGR cooler at a minimum.
If you have a 2011 6.7, make sure you go to the dealership and get new glowplugs, if you don't it may cost you $16k. We just had one eat a glow plug and Ford's fix is to do a long block.... but good for we have a great relationship with a local dealer where they had ford cover the labor and they covered half the long block so in the end we only had to pay $6k, that's still a hard pill to swallow.... But if you own the kind of equipment we do that's nothing..... I'll try to get a picture of my fleet at some point.

I have the record in the company so far for the highest mileage 5.0, and mine has had the knock for a long time.

Nevertheless, it doesn't sound cool lol. I traded a 2013 that knocked. I bet it's still running fine somewhere, though.
Maybe the original poster will chime in again also. He probably knows more about it than I do.

According to what I've read, a slightly out of round cylinder. I've read of a few cases where the noise was pretty severe and Ford replaced the engine while the truck was in warranty. I honestly don't know if the sound is a huge problem or not. I'm assuming it isn't (if it isn't severely knocking). It seems to be pretty common. I imagine it's similar in severity to the early GM 5.3 "piston slap" noise. Most of those engines knocked, but most ran many miles.

I can't pinpoint the cause of it, but it's definitely in the lower end. From what the first driver of my truck has said it's been knocking since about 10k miles, and since I've made it this far I'm going to say it's not an issue haha.

So things have changed a little. I've added a Westin HDX brush guard, far better than the aluminum Ali Arc. I also went with 5100's all around set to 2.25" and added Ready-lift 1.25" leafs. I tow and haul pretty heavy quite a bit so these helped out a lot. I ended up picking up a set of American Outlaw 17's with Duratrac's for $300 but the tires were on their last leg, so I had Hankook Dynapro M/Ts thrown on, 285/75/17s. The latest was I pulled the factory cat-back and went all 3" with a Dynomax ultraflow in there, a bit louder than I wanted. Other than that nothing else besides miles, a tuner and CAI may be in its future though.
The salt up here is a killer..
These are fancy..
I'll get a pic of it as it sites here tomorrow.
