MSRP reduction and dealer negotiations
I'm in the process of negotiating a 2013 FX4. When I first started corresponding with local dealers via email, the MSRP as optioned was $49,615. I eventually played some dealers against each other to get a $42,943 out-the-door price, TTL included. These communications started about a month ago.
Today, I go to Ford.com and build the same truck, and the MSRP is now $45,615 - a $4,000 drop. So I contacted the dealer I was going to go with, attached screenshots of the build and MSRP, and asked if I can assume that the dealer's price would now be $38,943 - i.e., $4,000 less than previously.
The dealer responded by saying "The price did not drop they increased the rebate by $500 from $3500 to $4000. If you look below there are already $3500 in rebates plus your certificate. now there is $500 more for a total of $4000 plus your certificate."
This explanation doesn't pass the smell test - or I am a math idiot which may well be true. So, we had an initial MSRP of $49,615. The dealer's price breakdown was a sale price of $45,020, then a rebate of $2,000, another $1,000 to use FMCC (Ford credit - which I'd then refinance with someone else), and $750 for going to Ford Direct, and then $500 off for going with the V8.
Why shouldn't I expect the dealer's quote to go down $4,000 if the MSRP has clearly gone down by that much? I think I'm being snookered here, but would appreciate any feedback/comments.
BTW - this is for a 2013 FX4 Crew, 5.0L, ruby red, moonroof + nav, tailgate step, and 20" wheels.
Thanks!

I would think your price would go down $500. If you had $3500 in rebates in your quote, which you seem to understand, and the rebate increases from $3500 to $4000, logic says that your price should go down $500, not $4000.

Five-0 Ret.
Like it's been said brother, $500 more is all. When Ford changes the rebates you have to start over from the top of your deal, not at the bottom.
Welcome to the forum, and good luck on the deal. If you make it, let's see some pics.

I just picked up my 2013 fx4 screw fully loaded, sticker price was $49,220. Dealer knocked off $4250 and I got $4250 in rebates. I paid $39,720 for the truck, it was about $41500 after taxes, title and tags. I was looking at a 2012 with less options for $37500, so I'm pretty happy with the deal I got.
