Semi trucks move a huge amount of air, just seems a waste not to get in their slipstream when you can. And I'm not talking close...I'm talking a solid 2 second interval. Depending on the wind I see a 2-3 mpg improvement back there...but the wind has to be either no wind, tailwind, or headwind and the gains are greatest with the headwinds. Crosswinds put you out of the draft unless you are super close and that...is not recommended!
I used to just follow any car that passed me...gradually you'd end up following some lunatic driving like crazy and I figured I was safer from tickets by not being the front runner. Now I get behind semi trucks and if we pass another, I'll stay with the slower truck. A semi at 60mph, that's where I can eek out 26mph.
