What model year do you have? There was a TSB to fix earlier models because the re-calculation took a long time to happen. I had the problem every time I parked with the rear facing the house and nose down. Drove me crazy but the dealer reprogrammed something and if the problem re-occurred it was resolved after I drove it for a minute or so (vs previously it might take half a day and several restarts).

The fuel sender and pickup is located towards the back of the gas tank. When u park on a downhill it thinks there is less gas in the tank then when I was shut off and when u get back on to leek ground it goes slowly back to where it is level. Of u park on a uphill then it will say more miles to empty because it thinks there is more gas. And when u hit the gas at a green light u use more gas then say just cruising so u will have less gas then just cruising.

Mine does the same. Our school parking lot is on a steep hill and my MTE always drops a bunch when my tank is getting empty. I just hope I don't ever have a problem getting it started since the pump is at the back.

The computer uses a bunch of info to come with that number. If you hit the gas to pass it will go down because it now thinks you will use more fuel. Go down a hill no gas pedal now it thinks you will need less. Remember it is just guess based on your driving how far you can make it. I have run the truck to 0 miles and put 33 gallons in a 36 tank so it has a back to the backup. Just think if you are ford you would not want all those nasty calls about people running of of fuel because of the miles to empty guess. If the low light comes on in my wife's car the miles to empty will no even show up.

I found mine fairly accurate, if i go on a long highway drive I reset it, and watch the odometer and miles to empty, even the fuel burnt was pretty close. My old chevy was way off, the fuel to empty would decrease a lot faster than the distance traveled.

Pretty flat in Kansas and mine never really jumps. I've only seen the reading change if I alter my driving drastically such as hammering on the gas.

Mine is a '12 FX4 5.0. Makes sense with the sensor in the back of the tank. Funny thing about the first time I noticed it Sunday is we went down hill then immediately back up another and it kept dropping. In hindsight I should of filled it up to see how many gallons it would take. I'm just going to try to not go below 1/4 tank, we'll see how that works out.

I was going to ask the same thing. Last night mine was reading 394 miles, the next time I looked, it was at 400. No hills involved, just flat roads, maybe a few small rises, but I thought that was pretty weird. I do know it is not accurate at all. When I filled it was 660 MTE, right now it is 34 miles off at around a half tank, and the MPG's on the trips haven't changed by more than a few 10ths, in fact they have gone slightly up since I filled, so you would thing MTE would be a bit higher. The one in the Hybrid though is pretty accurate. Of all the cars and trucks I owned, this is the only one that shows accurate to within 2 tenths of a mile. Heck my dually was showing me getting 34 MPG most of the time, but it didnt have a MTE counter on it.

Mynderstanding is that Ford and other manufacturers do this on pupose b/c they don't trust that you will fill up when necessary. My truck showed 30 miles to empty one time and I filled up. It only took 31 gallons to fill it whcih meant I had 5 gallons left and probably closer to 90 miles to empty. They do not wat you to run out of gas b/c you could be looking at a huge repair bill. The gas is what keeps the fuel pump cool. With out gas the fuel pump can burn out quickly.
