Max Tow Package
#41
I bought my truck with the regular tow package because the ford brochure stated that the trucks had a class IV hitch. A class IV hitch has 10,000 lb weight carrying and 1000 lb tongue weight capability. The tag on my hitch has a lower rating. How can ford get away with that. I can't use a WDH on my boat trailer. Does anyone know if I can just upgrade my hitch or do I have to replace the entire bumper system. Is that even possible?

wait. what?
what's it say it's rated to? I know my 2010 5.4L truck with 3.55's, 145" wheelbase and the regular tow package is rated to tow 9,600 so yours couldn't possibly be that far under..
the max tow package does have an entirely different rear bumper though.

Boats are usually less than 10% tongue weight. Most likely you are ok. Even the max tow bumper/hitch assembly only adds a bit more capacity to your setup. Where you are usually limited is cargo weight on our trucks.
A down and dirty method of tongue weight - how much does the rear of the truck sag when you hook up?
There is no replacement bumper/hitch assembly that I'm aware of.
Honestly, I think you are ok assuming you close to correct on the boat weight.

I'm a little confused?? The Ford manual says the front fender should be 2 inches higher when hooked to the trailer?? The whole idea of the weight distribution hitch is to add weight to the front axle so you get the front end back to stock height like when not towing. Or if anything to within 1/2" of stock height.. My trailer weighed in at 7500lbs on the Cat scale and my tongue weight is 940lbs. I use the Equal-i-zer with 1000lb bars. With your trailer weighing 9300lbs(not sure if that's dry or wet weight?) i cant see your 800lb distribution bars being enough for that kind of load??? I will agree with you that these trucks certainly are GREAT PULLING MACHINES!!!
P.S.- Great job on your color choice!!!

My truck is a max tow Eco and it doesn't have tow mirrors. Canada could be different, but mine came with the power folding mirrors..weird.

Canada the big mirrors are a separate option, you can get them with or without max tow. You can get max tow with or without them. Main reason I didn't opt for max tow, had it come with the 500 dollar mirrors maybe but it wasn't a good deal for 1000 bucks for what you get.

I hope i can help here,,sorry for the delay,,work and weekends delays,,I have a Hornet 30RKDS, and the only storage is in the very front. Trying to keep the tongue weight down and the load balanced is a challange due to 120lbs of propane, 54 pounds of battery and an electric tongue jack all there already. I move the load around while traveling ( thanks to Ackermann Racing for use of thier scales) to reduce the tongue weight down to 900 lbs, no more than 950. With the equalizer hitch and sway controller, it only raises the front end 1 1/2 inch, and is very stable at hwy speeds ( never over 65 ). I had posted about the rear bearings, as far as I know they are no different on the tow pack, but too much weight on the rear is not good for them, sorry for the confusion. The majority of wrecks i do see with trailers is from careless towing, not preparing or balancing the load, no tie downs, etc. My main concern is this,,these trucks are monsters, and will tow a house with no issue giving a person a false sense of security, please just be safe when towing, think about what you are doing, and get to where you are going to enjoy whatever it is you are towing!! P.S> Love the color, beleive it or not bought it sight unseen, needed the tow pack!

I'm still confused on how you are getting your tongue weight #'s ? After looking at the Keystone Rv website your trailer comes with a dry tongue weight of 960lbs. After adding the propane tanks, battery and whatever you load in the front storage you are for sure in the 1100lb range. And you are only using 800lb bars??? After hooking to the trailer and adjusting the WDHitch properly your front fender height should be within 1/2" of your unloaded front fender height. 1 1/2" is to high and you need bigger bars to transfer more weight to the front axle. I'm also assuming you have the same GVWR on your truck that i do(7700lbs). My trailer is 6500lbs dry and has a dry tongue weight of 850lbs. With the trailer loaded and ready to camp i had it weighed at my local Cat scale and my truck weighed 7520lbs with the trailer hooked up,family on board and a full tank of fuel. My trailer weighed in at 7500lbs. I'm within 200lbs of my trucks limit so if your trailer has a dry tongue weight of 110lbs more than mine you might be real close to your trucks limit? I'm not sure what you have for payload but be safe!
With that being said, I've got mine set a bit heavier than that. I found mine road to heavy with only 1/2" rise. Mine is at 3/4" rise.
The single biggest help I found is airbags in the rear. Really stabilized my ride.
