Default Map Update Ripoff?

I've had my 2010 Lariat less than a year, and I just received an offer to update to the 2011 Ford Map Update.

For "Only $199". (Their words)

It looks like it might be from Ford, but if you read it closely, it is from www.navigation.com.

Anyone else get this?

Looks like some opportunistic marketing on their part. Obviously they've got your name from God-knows where, know you have a new truck, and are trying to take advantage of you.
I'd tell them to go fly a kite.

That is NAVTEQ and they are the map supplier for the navigation units. If you look in the back of your Sync manual you will find their contact information. My guess is they got your info from Ford. Most likely we all will be getting contacted by them. I figure that a 2010 better be pretty accurate and shouldn't need any updates for a year or two.

And THAT is why I opted for the non-nav unit in my 2010. It's a $2400 option and updates are steep. My little Garmin Nuvi costs only $140 or so and every two years I can sell it on eBay and replace it for a net of only around $60. I did pay the $435 for the Sony speakers from Ford but the way I see it I saved $2000 initially and another $140 every two years.

My backup camera display is in the mirror so not as big as the one on the Nav unit but IMHO still better than being locked into Ford's nav. They definitely look great though so certainly don't fault anyone for getting it. I'd personally suggest what was stated above, get the updated map every 2 years or so. Better yet wait until you start noticing roads not showing up, etc and then buy it. If you travel mostly in non-developing areas you may get by with more than ever 2 years..

Map updates aren't cheap. Anyways, what's $200 when you spent $2400 for the nav unit?

I had a 2004 Ram with Nav - the entire time, there were maybe 2-3 major roads that I ever noticed not there - then milwaukee got screwy after the interchange update. No big deal as long as you pay attention

It's called "Navigation" not "drive the damn truck for you"

On the Garmin umits now they off lifetime map updates for around $100 or $120, saw them at best buy. Now you can keep it and pay a one time fee to update!

The disc based NAV updates are always crazy! You would think the OE would get with the program and stop charging crazy outragous prices! I mean you can go get a Garmin for $100 bucks that is on par with the $2400 ford unit!

Default Ripoff? Perhaps not

Navteq is the supplier of maps for the Ford Navigation sysem -- factory installed.

I don't know anything about the company you mention but that is the price for a NAVTEQ upgrade and unforuntately, you do have an older version.

I know that because I just took deliver of a Platimum F150 two weeks ago and when I had trouble setting a destination found out that I have map version 2.0x and last month they released version 3.0

The price is $199 not including shipping
