Good thing you noticed that! As for the O-ring sticking to the block, never ever have I had that issue with ANY oil filter. Like others stated, throw some oil on the seal to avoid this issue, and make for easier removal. If you need a tool to remove the filter you probably put it on to tight to begin with.

These things are mass produced. Of course there are going to be possible issues. Always check parts, pieces, etc before using them.

Motocraft filters are good filters. K&N I have not heard very many good things about them.

Mass produced things don't have to be of poor quality, or contain defects.
That's a quality control problem.

I've never had a gasket to stick to the block either. Small dab of oil around the gasket and just hand tight. Heat cycles seem to tighten it up more than hand tight. The Motorcraft is a good filter, good anti drainback valve.

I've been using MC's for 15 years and that has never once happened to me. MC filters aren't junk, your technique is.
The title of this thread should have 'Motorcraft' removed from it. Its misleading as this can happen to any brand filter.

I don't know why but for some reason always open the box and look at the filter before buying. Bought a 5 qt. Motorcraft 5w-20 at Walmart and got home and it had been opened about a pint had been used out of it. People are so cheap these days, they buy something a use part of it and bring it back. I needed a couple of metric zirk fittings for MC, went to AZ. First they never heard of a zirk fitting, I asked was this an auto parts store. only had 1 pkg of metric fittings 8 to a pkg. and it had been opened. the standard size fitting were just gray and the metric had a blue tint to them. the metric had been opened and taped back, 2 gray fitting put back in to make up the 8 pieces.

Sounds like the exact issue. The orange part of the seal (internal) came apart. I only posted my concern to share as many of you likely do your own oil changes. I feel very fortunate to have caught it. I am a die hard Ford guy- no underlying motives here. I want to use Ford parts on a Ford. But in this case, I will likely steer clear going forward on the oil filters. If Ford is not managing the quality control, I don't see it as a Ford product anyhow. Ford simply approves the manufacturers specs. It is up to the manufacturing facility to ensure they are in control. If this were a non- critical part, I may take a less critical stance personally. But an oil filter? Little room for outliers from an effect standpoint.

Old Smoky - Motorcraft filters are junk.

Every one of the filters I've used has left the outer gasket on the housing.
Usually caused by not putting a film of oil on the gasket before installing the filter and/or overtightening.

Used K&N oil filters for 11 years on my Powerstroke, never left a gasket on the housing.
Your $$$$$ ... So be it if you want to spend 2x - 3x more for an inferior product.
