Default Maintenance Requirements

I have a 2011 5.0 2WD with 59924 and asked my local dealer what a 60K maintenance would be and they gave me a list of $800 of fluid change on Diff, Coolant, and Transmission. Clean the fuel injectors and throttle body.

I looked in the Owners manual and all it says at that mileage is to replace bearings if not sealed and an oil change. Only at a 100K miles does it say to change the coolant.

Do I trust the owners guide or the dealer? I do not have an issue of doing these task my self. Also heard that changing the transmission fluid is not a good thing to do on newer cars.

My driving habits are driving 300 miles a week in rush hour traffic on an interstate. Maybe run into about 5 stop lights each day. I don't hammer on the gas or brakes.

Any thoughts or guidance on things like this?

I would follow the maintenance schedule found with your owners manual. The dealer just wants to make money.

The scheduled maintenance by the owners manual is 100,000 for coolant, and 150,000 for transmission for 3.5, 3.7 and 5.0 by my book. Ask your dealer why he wants to vary from what's required, maybe put him on the spot.

Follow the manual recommendations. The shop manual has a little something else to say about the trans service. Something I remember them teaching us at Ford's tech school, the trans is sealed for life and should only be serviced if in severe duty or an internal failure.

The factory is concerned with cost of ownership and the lower they make it they feel it helps sell cars/trucks. I cut in half any suggestion for maintenance on any powered unit I own. At 60k my transmission will get a fluid change and the coolant too. I stay away from additives unless its neglected. I have seen plenty of engines apart that had the minimum services done, not pretty inside!!! Too much money invested to go cheap on maintenance!!! Up to 1 year or as much as 10,000 miles between oil changes is what Ford suggests. Not me...

True and they also want you to buy a new one every so many years, now given the fact that technology in fluids and filtering have come a very long way most of the recommendations are spot on, they still want to sell you a new truck though.

I know once mine is out of warranty the 1st time it gives me any trouble that I can't readily repair she's going straight to the dealer as trade on a new one, unless my son want's it.
