Default 2014 Sunroof - Broken Track

Just posting this here for the sake of full disclosure. I've posted quite a few times on this forum that I've not experienced many of the issues that others have, so I wanted to take a moment to just let the forum know that I now am one of the people who has officially had an "issue" here. I'm not venting, or asking for advice, etc. Again, just pointing out that something on my truck broke. So, to that end ...

Last Thursday evening, I went to open my sunroof to the "vent" option. When I did, there was a loud pop/crack noise, and it definitely caught my attention. At first I figured it may have just been a stuck seal and it make a pop noise when it released to lift up. After a few minutes of allowing hot air to vent out of the truck, I went to close it, and it made another very loud pop, and the sunroof did NOT close. I tried using the switch to operate the sunroof a few more times, and could hear the motor run and something moving on the track, but the glass/roof didn't ever move. At that point, I immediately knew that the track/runner mechanism had broken on both sides - each "pop" was a piece on either side that broke.

So on Friday morning, I went to the dealer and they looked at it in the service bay and immediately knew what it was. There are some metal "levers" or "arms" that run in the track and connect to the glass/roof panel itself are "connected" by a plastic spider/crab kinda piece that rotates between the two arms and allows it to do the vent vs. retract function. Those plastic pieces - from what I have been told by both Ford and the sunroof company that my dealer subs out to to fix these things - these plastic thingys are known to break often enough, but was told also that this is the same basic sunroof design on a gazillion cars/trucks, and that the failure rate is pretty low.

Anyway, the part (track and module, whatever that means) is in, and delivered to the sunroof shop, and I'm now trying to schedule when I can get my truck over there to get it fixed. They said it's a 1-day deal to fix it ... drop it off first thing in the AM, pick it up that afternoon. I just hope they don't screw anything else up while working on it.

note: The guy at the sunroof shop did get the sunroof down to an almost-fully-closed position that will keep rain out, so that's been nice, not having to worry about an open sunroof for the last 4 days.

Once the repair is done, I'll report back. Hopefully it will be good as new, or better, and I'll basically have a new sunroof on my 2.5 year old truck. Wish me and my truck luck lol.

Hope your repair goes well without any other issues.
The sunroofs have had the same tracks and parts from 2000 thru 2014 (Possibly earlier and later).
I made my repair with parts from sunroofdr.com 4 years ago for $135 and 3 hours of work.
Still good.

This has been a concern since day one with my '14. I've never even opened it due to the fear of it breaking something at the most inconvenient time and possibly leaving me with a cab full of water.

Not a fan of a sunroof anyway but I'll take a look at the sunroof dr options.

They don't break often. I believe mine broke due to iced over and attempt to operate.
When they do break, get the parts from sunroofdr.com.
Either make the repair yourself or find an independent repair shop that has made the repair before. Usually about $300 labor to have it done.
Ford usually wants to replace the entire track for mucho dinero.

Its ok ... mine is still under warranty and isnt costing me a thing other than a days worth of time. If it breaks again outside of warranty I will go the route of sunroofdr.com

UPDATE:

Dropped the truck off this morning, and was able to pick it up at lunch time, all fixed up like brand new. Not sure exactly what parts/pieces had to be replaced, but they did it super quick and you can't even tell that anything was done (ie: they didn't screw anything up inside the truck or otherwise).

Total cost to me was $0.00 due to it being under warranty, but the shop told me that if it breaks again outside of warranty they can fix it for $450.00 if I go straight to them. They said if I go through Ford, it would be somewhere around $2K, give or take.

So, in summary, not only am I lucky to have a great dealership here, the shop that does this work for them is also A+.
