The 4x4 **** says nothing on it.

If the 4x4 selector **** does NOT have a 4A position then you use XL12. If it has the 4A then it's LV. In that case it'll also have a sticker by the fill plug on the T-case calling for LV only.
You are correct that the 4x4 **** says nothing on it. The markings I'm referring to are printed AROUND it.

2H,4H,4L that's all that's printed, thanks again. No tag anywhere on transfer case.

Ford updated and now says that you can run LV in both types of transfer cases. IMO the manual is the best reference BUT, it doesn't take into consideration when something is superseded.
