Brittany: I have seen a few posts where people thought that it was more in the hubs or 4 X 4 so they suggested that you try to switch it into 4 X 4 when the problem is happening. So last night on the way home from work it was about -4 degrees and the front end was really grinding and I could feel it slowing down the truck. I switched the truck into Auto 4 X 4 and the grinding stopped immediately. I am not a technician so I still don't know what the problem is but I would assume that would eliminate the brakes as the problem. I will try once again with the local dealership but it is really frustrating when all they can say is, "we don't hear the problem" or "we couldn't make the sound happen" because they have just pulled it into a warm shop or by the time they look at the truck the temperature outside has risen. If anybody has an idea what this problem could be, please let me know so I can tell the dealer to look at that specific problem.

Yes, I am. I have decided to just wait awhile. It has been going on each winter since I bought the truck new and the dealer knows about it, but does not know what is causing it. Rather than play "guess a part", I am just waiting until Ford puts out info on this known problem. My truck is a 2013 Lariat SuperCrew with 23,000 miles.

you have a vacuum leak somewhere when it is cold. it is most likely at the steering knuckle as was mentioned earlier by mr. positraction. the system works by using vacuum to control the IWE hubs actuation. when in 2WD there is constant vacuum at the IWE's at the wheels and when in 4X4 there is no vacuum. so the grinding you are hearing is the IWE's partially engaging due to lack of vacuum and once you switch to 4X4 you are removing all vacuum and allowing the IWE hubs to fully engage. now you just have to find the leak. check out the following link, it may help. let us know how it turns out,

Same thing here. -39 C this morning and the grinding is back.
The truck is only 1 month old and the IWE have already been replaced.

First they told me it was the installer of my levelling kit that broke them but offered to replace them under warranty. Now its doing the same thing again... I guess the levelling kit had nothing to do with this, its the COLD weather that is to blame.

I had this problem with my 2010. Dealer replaced IWE and the problem would recur until finally my original dealer just started telling me he couldn't hear the grinding... it was ridiculous... I even took a ride with the GM of the dealership and he told me his ears were no good from too many rock concerts. I finally had to go to another dealer and they diagnosed the bad IWE right away and replaced it again. Unfortunately the rear end in that truck was also eating a clutch pack about every 5,000 miles and I had gone through two sets of front shocks. (No offroad driving, very little towing, and mostly highway miles by the way.) I finally had to end up trading it in when the powertrain warranty ran out. The truck was either a complete lemon, though it didn't qualify for the lemon law in Ohio, or my dealers service team was completely inept as everything they touched would fail again soon after.

I am having a similar problem with my 2012 FX4 Ecoboost 4WD. We've been colder than normal this week and my truck has done this grinding/rubbing noise 3 mornings this week. Starts up fine but as soon as i leave my gravel road i hear the loud grinding. First morning i turned around and went home and it stopped (thought i'd gotten lucky and it was just a rock in the brakes). Second morning i pulled off the road and my mechanic came to get me and the noise had stopped. He worked on the truck, found a busted seal on the rear axle, did some work on the rear brakes, hoping it would fix it. But this morning it did it again. He has the truck tonight and will see if it will act up in the morning, in hopes he can figure it out. I'm reading and researching, hoping to get some clues. I'd love some ideas. Nothing worse than a mystery.

I have a 2013 F-150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4. Only when it's cold will a grinding noise start. The colder it is the worse it gets. It started when the truck was 1 or 2 years old with about 12,000 miles and gets worse each winter.

I also have the slip bump issue with the drive shaft which 2 dealers I've taken it to have said they found nothing wrong. They won't look at the TSB for the exact same symptoms I have because the TSB only lists up to 2012 models. But that's another issue.

Good luck. Mine is at the dealer now for warranty repair but since it has warmed having to wait for an appointment I don't trust they will do anything. I'll keep you posted though.
