Did you have to do anything to the topper to set it up for the tent? Mine says it has a max 250# load carrying capacity.
Same as mine, 250#. (SnugTop) The SnugTop does have a 1" reinforced roof, which adds to the stability, but don't want to push it. Structurally speaking, the closer to the edge of the shell you mount the rails the better (weight will tend to transfer down the sides better). Also, I did the rail mounting, and I used EVERY hole in the rails. Installers will usually use every-OTHER hole (according to an installer). This just simply splays the weight better. Nothing more. And I installed the rails as "outboard" as I could and still land on the extra thick part of the shell's roof. FYI, I tend to over-engineer everything I build. That's what 25 years of structural welding does to ya... it warps the mind man!
That said, my Tepui weighs in at 150#, plus about another 20# for the 2" memory foam pad I put in, then about another 10# for the king size sleeping bag (stowed in the tent during travel). Annex was in the bed of the truck. The only issue we had was when we got home we noticed that one of the Thule cross bars had deflected a bit. So, I bought the hardware to add a 3rd cross bar (which was recommended to me before the trip).
Now, *our* shells both being rated for 250# means 250# Dynamic load. That is what the shell is rated for while driving down the road, bouncing and bumping. Static load rating would be much higher. The Tepui is rated for 750#, and the guy I talked to at SnugTop agreed the shell would be good for the weight of everything while standing still.
