If left plugged in they go into parking mode when the built in gps relays the non movement which activates internal motion/impact detection and records a set amount of time before and after the event, so it also acts just like a home surveillance system/DVR.
I use to leave them plugged in all the time but the RFI screws with my remote start range so I plug it in when I get ready to start rolling.

I think GPS is accurate enough myself, in most situations (outside of valleys or cities), on a unit that has a high sampling rate and can track at least 6 satellites, but the technology has its limitations and the law knows this.
Edit:
Turns out you can't use the less-than symbol on this forum or your reply cuts off. Nice bug.

Then you got lucky . Law enforcement frequently calibrates their CERTIFIED speed-measurement devices to be admissible in court. Cheap dashcams (by cheap, I generally mean less than $10k) aren't certified, nor frequently calibrated. GPS also can't accurately track speed when there is any vertical change. Looking at two landmarks, figure out their distance, and finding the amount of time that lapses between reaching those two landmarks is evidence that would be admissible (and is something some police jurisdictions use to write tickets - calculate travel time between two different "speed traps"). One could easily make a dashcam that displays speed higher or lower than actual, and since the thing isn't certified by any legal-authority to be accurate, there is no evidence that any readings are true, nor tempered with. no doubt I got lucky! I think my attitude towards him and the conversation helped as well. My argument was simply that he had stopped the wrong car. He was not using laser (I know cause I also have a radar detector) so I had my radar that tells me my speed (gps) which was exactly the same as my speedo and my dash cam that was reading the same speed so with all that plus my friendly attitude he let me go. Off topic but I think a friendly attitude really helps especially these days with cops being treated the way they are. It's a rough job for sometimes not much pay.
Still worth it to own $40 dashcams in vehicles! Plus you can now get 64GB microsd cards for around $15. Days ago I purchased a larger 128GB for $35.
With the G1W, 32GB = 5 hours, 64GB = 10 hours, 128GB = 20 hours of footage. For those paranoid of having longer lengths of driving recorded, you can get 10 minutes of looping recording on a 1GB microsd card. The card may not last that long being overwritten that often though.

Yeah, of course you should be polite. Still worth it to own $40 dashcams in vehicles! Plus you can now get 64GB microsd cards for around $15. Days ago I purchased a larger 128GB for $35. Must have been something in my earlier post. I can't reproduce. Using Firefox on PC. Tried re-quoting and entering the same text above, but it's working now. Yesterday I tried to fix my earlier post and it still had problems, so I changed the < to "less than".

Can't hurt.
