Leer and ARE Caps on '09-'13 F-150's
#131
Quick question i have been looking at getting a cap for my truck. I just read about best top. its a soft top for your truck. You can fold it down when you don't need it and up when you need to haul dogs, which is why I want a cap in the first place. Not many reviews though. Thought maybe you all could help.
P.S. new to the forum so hello from pensacola.

Just got this about a month ago... I really like it.. barely noticeable are the "Yakima" rails on top for the mounts/bars. I put fishing poles up there when the bars are on. Works great with the SKI holders... Anyway, it is an ARE Z series. The Z series has an invisible hinge on the rear door and make the truck look more like a "SUV" vice a truck with old skool window topper and has frameless side windows. For whatever reason, some like the old skool look on a new truck, I dont. The Z series also come fully lined with cloth vice some crappy white fiberglass interior like my last one had on a previous truck.
Take your time ensure you get what you want... resale on these toppers is the SUCK...lol
Cheers

welcome to the forum rob.
I initially wanted exactly what you've been considering. but there was a few things that bothered me about them.
blind spots. when you've got that thing set up, remember, those windows are made of clear soft plastic. in extreme heat or cold, they'll crack, fade, discolor, etc...
the next thing I considered was the material they're actually made out of.
how hard would it be for someone to take a knife, and make their way into the box of your truck to remove contents or just steal the tailgate, if you don't have a lock of course.
back to those windows, do you like the way they open? the ones I looked at, looked pretty cheap on the quality scale imo.
what if you took on a roll over or even on your side and then finish off on your roof? is it going to protect your dog(s) enough? and if they die, can you live with yourself knowing that you're willing to part ways with "man's best friend" just to save a few bucks?
anyways, i'm not trying to be a *****. i'm just letting you know some of the thoughts and questions I've had when looking at them.
in the end, I opted for a leer100XL. I got keyless entry, a 3 plug 12v hub so I can plug some fans in and a beer fridge in the box while traveling with the dog, then I got thule rails (only) so I can add a sexy custom cargo rack with lots of goodies at a later date, and a non tinted removable slider window. I figured that with the truck back window tinted and the other three windows tinted, it would be plenty dark enough that I don't need the slider to mask anything behind me.
anyways, my truck is a 2010 screw 5.4L 4x4 with a 5.5 box sterling grey in color.
yes I know it's more money rob, but when it truly comes to safety and security... it's just not worth it to me to try and save a buck here or there over it.
perhaps you're willing to wait, save up some coin (father's day, xmas, b-day, dog bday) pretty sure you can find a few good ways to help the kids to want to help you get a cap. I mean, when they see that you're really dedicated towards it, they may even put their tooth fairy money towards it. if they're young enough that is. lol.
anyways man... remember this one thing please.
get what you want. you don't have to get what I think is best or someone else tries to get you into, or brags about. the only thing I really care about on this forum, is that we're all happy with our investments.
btw, have you tried the usb2 mod? it's not that expensive and adds some freedom when it comes to your stereo. its like giving it a 64GB hard drive. I think that thread is over 100 pages long. so if you decide to do it, I can guide you through it.
btw... welcome to the forum again, from Canada
