Default Larger tires for 3.31 gears

Hey guys, first thread started here. Great site. I have been lurking for a while and found great info.

How bad to you think my power would be affected with 295/65/18 tires on a 5.4 with 3.31 gears. 3.31 was not my first choice but loved the rest of the truck, so I went with it. The 295 goodyear duratrac looks like a sweet tire so I was going to give it a shot. I just don't want to be missing power and basically lose 6th gear, kinda like I lost 5th on a previous jeep. I don't want to swap gears for a while, but will probably start looking into a locker, so I can get off the boat ramp this summer.

By the way, my stock tires are 275/65/18 so I am only going up 1" and narrower by .1"

Default gotta be a way

to calculate the new actual ratio... I think it will limit 6th for sure, pretty tall gearing to start with.

I dont think going up only 1" will really even be noticeable. I have 35's and stock gears (3.55) and its not bad enough for me to want to re-gear it.

Here's a thought. A 2009 with a 5.4 and 3.31 gears has about the same tow rating as the previous year with the 5.4 and 3.55 gears due to the 6 speed transmission, and 20 extra horsepower. My 2008 with 3.55's hardly noticed when I put on my 285-70-16's. And I started with 235-75-17's.

Since your 1st gear is lower than mine, the rest of your gears are closer together, and you're only going 1" bigger instead of 2" like I did, I doubt you'll even notice a thing.

Thanks for the input. I will try it out and see what happens. I plan to regear at some point in life, but I have a small boat and motorcycle trailer. Kansas is pretty flat, so no hills to worry about here.

Larger tires for 3.31 gears-image-4291287614.jpg

295x65x18 with 3:31s...didn't notice much of a difference at all on flat roads ...little sluggish going through the mountains when i visit my folks but it was already sluggish in the hills to begin with so not sure how much of a difference it really made.

My dad has the 3:73s in his and a lot more throttle response...my next f150 will have the 3:73s...maybe even the 4:10s if I can folk out the $$ for the raptor ;-)

If you regear it I would recommend either getting limited slip or a locker while you're at it.
