Because it's a requirement by law to have your registration in the vehicle at all times! And before you say that it's in your wallet, what if someone else is driving your truck? They don't have your wallet in their back pocket.

You can change the keycode too if you're worried about a thief getting access to it later on. It's in the manual...that is if you still know it after the thief has taken the code as I believe you need that to change it.
The factory code does not change unless you get a dealer to do a reprogram. You can add your own. And yes the thief coming back was my concern.

I believe more times than people realize it is in fact a consperacy. I've seen too man crime rings busted that were such. But assuming that theifs just know this "recommendation" it makes sense why someone went through my junk a few weeks back. I'm not sure what they'd have gained by having the keycode exactly, but I never keep anything of value in my truck that would be considered of value to someone of such character. Unless you consider my bible, prayer book, sacramentals and seminary jacket valuable. I always tells my wife that if someone breaks into my truck and actually goes through my stuff, they'll end up converting to Catholicism (Christians for you dummies) because of all the historical information contained in my source books.

Hopefully, now that they've gone through my truck to discover I leave nothing of value to a thief they'll leave us alone. However, this has made my decision to install video cameras all around my house that records so that I can help catch the thiefs braking into homes in our neighborhood. I also plan to install a gate. If I get a gate, I might even get a dog that they won't feel comfortable dealing with either. They definitely won't survive a break-in if my son or me are at home. I hear arrows hurt more than bullets.

As far as leaving registration in the vehicle we were actually advised to not do so by the police (when my wife's vehicle was stolen years ago). It is a pain though when you have a shared vehicle and you have to make sure you have the registration with you....

You're correct it is just a personal code that you can change and not the factory set code. Thanks for the clarification.

I always pay the extra $1 for a duplicate for my wife - who is the only other person driving my truck. It's not a law you have it IN your vehicle it's a law you be able to PRODUCE if upon demand. In PA you get 48 hours to produce both registration and financial responsibility proof (insurance).

I'll keep my proof of ownership on my person thanks - don't really care if a thief has proof of insurance.

I suspect that the laws vary from state to state. In my state, proof of ownership is the vehicle's title, not the registration. I keep my registration in the glove box, and the title locked up safe and sound. But I also don't live in a high-theft area - maybe I'd keep the registration on me if I did.

You can only change your custom "personal" code; you can't easily change the factory key code.

I keep mine in my wallet. But if someone steals my truck - I personally would rather it never be found and just start over with a brand new one.

I keep my factory key card with my pink slip and program a custom one into my truck. I inputted the factory code into my phone's note app in case I need it for programming purposes.
