I can guarantee you if you are getting kbb trade in value the dealer is getting it back on the other end of the deal. Remember buying a vehicle and trade in are two independent financial transactions. Dealers get you by treating it as one.
There are exceptions to this with high demand, low supply vehicles or times when used vehicles are in reduced supply, but it is generally true.

if it has been driven it will not fetch 'excellent' condition. if it does, the dealer is playing 'new car math' and not lowering the price on what you're buying as much as they could...

I got $500 over KBB on my last trade in. They offered me 18,500 but after about a week of haggling they got up to 25,500. I would've taken 25k but I had another dealership offer 25 so their competitor had to beat them to get my business.

Nope simply put you are wrong sorry. I do not discuss a trade until deal one is done. I walk if I don't get a fair price on the purchase. All my deals on the the last 4 autos I have bought have been online and will not discuss the trade until after we agree on price. Oh and I do not discuss trade at all online.

KBB says my truck is worth almost what I paid, plus tax, title, and license. Within a couple hundred bucks. They say the dealer would sell it for almost $5,000 more than I paid. Crazy!

I really don't understand why making the sale and trade-in two separate transactions and using KBB when negotiating.
Dealers know the drill, they ain't stupid. They have been through the last minute trade after the new truck negotiation. My brother owned his dealership and would laugh (inside) when people tried this stunt thinking for a better deal.
I have a pretty good idea what I am willing to pay for a new truck minus incentives so I know my starting point. I also try and use MMR (auction prices) for my trade on the excellent value. Why would a dealer buy your truck for more if they can get the same thing from an auction and have it shipped? Granted they know shipping cost.
I just negotiate the difference because bottom line, that is what really matters, I've done the math and so have they. I email them and tell them what I want and move on. If they play with the numbers, I know what they are doing and I know what my range of acceptance will be. Just makes it easier and upfront.
