Just how water resistant are key fobs?

Mine went through the wash machine about 5 years ago and still works fine. Opened it up and just let it air dry.

If you swim in a chlorinated pool the chlorine can cause slow, insidious corrosion to start. Soaking it for awhile in fresh water (distilled is best but not required) is good to do before moving it to the rice.

Try the old "cell phone goes swimming" trick used in Hawai'i (ALL the time):
Take the key (or cell phone) apart and put into a bag or a bowl full of rice. Leave for 24 hours or so, and... if it's going to work at all, it'll work then.
