Default JLT 3.0 Oil Separator results after first 750 miles

After much contemplation of whether or not to go with a catch can, I opted for a JLT 3.0 Oil Separator on my 2013 3.5 EB. I checked it for the first time today after logging about 750 miles on it. Given that I've read a lot of people saying that they collect more in the winter and not so much in the summer, I was a bit surprised at how much it collected at 750. I think I will be on the dump once a month plan based on these results.

Some disclaimers.
- I am not a pro video guy. Doing this with one hand was a bit challenging.
- Although I say there is no wear on the hose under the cover, you may see a line on top of the hose when I remove the cover. This is a "scuff" more than it is wear and is the reason I opted to file away a bit after the first day. With closed eyes, you can't feel it.
- The larger white container I dump the cup into has a slight amount of stuff already in the bottom. This is some residual oil from when I change the oil in my lawn tractor. Only what you see in the cup is what I got from the JLT.
- I was just off a 12mi mountain bike ride and had some endorphins flowing. This made me a bit yakky. Skip to the 6min mark or so to see me actually dump the can.

Anyway, this is just to help others evaluating options so be kind in your feedback! I think it's a nice item for a mere 139 bucks!

I've been trying to figure out if it's a placebo effect, wishful thinking or for real. On my last trip to see my daughter at college (About 300mi round trip) I averaged around 19.8 when previously I had been seeing around 18.8 or so. This is interstate cruising at 70'ish. Around town it could be up to .5mpg or so, or maybe not and only reading a bit more due to other factors such as weather, load, tire pressure etc.. Either way, not enough mpg improvement to be putting it on for this reason by any means.

Excellent! I live just a stone's throw away from Trek Headquarters.

I have a highly customized Cannondale Habit Carbon 27.5 1x11 Sram XX1 and a custom built frankenbike Cannondale Super V/Jekyll 76er 1x10 Shimano XT

I also have a custom built Haro hardtail for winter and my very first MTB, an old Raleigh M400 that I've customized, both 26"

I recently sold my Specialized Stumpjumper 29er.

Funny how these companies just can't resist throwing a little bit extra on top of their "why you need this" pitch. Diluted fuel, lower octane. Too much.

Beside that, the PCV system's purpose is not to vent crankcase pressure.

"How does it work?
During the process of venting crankcase pressure back through your intake track, large amounts of oil, in the form of vapors can gather/accumulate in your intake tube, intake manifold runners and even dilute your gas, lowering its octane level. "

The real question is - did your intake manifold stay dry? That's the reason for the catch can, right?

I'll go open it up and get back to you. Not.

For 139 bucks though I don't care that much. If it's keeping that crap I poured out from adding to the coking factor on the back of my valves, it's worth it. If it's not doing much, it looks kinda nice and only cost a little more than one fill up of my 36 gallon tank. To each his own and YMMV.
