Sync will only notify you when one comes in if iphone screen is locked.

Mine stopped for a few weeks after I turned the show in locked screen setting off. Now it works again after turning that back on.
I have a 2012 and iPhone 5 through Verizon. When selecting the "message notification" through sync to yes it tells me "unsupported" :-(

SHOW NOTIFICATIONS must be on before it will be supported.

1) Truck - Delete phone from BT device list.
2) Phone - Delete Sync from BT connection list.
3) Phone - Reboot. (Do steps 4 & 5 while you wait for this to finish)
4) Truck - Turn off, pull the key, open the door.
5) Truck - Close the door, restart.
6) Truck/Phone - Pair your phone fresh w/MFT. Let it finish.
7) Phone - Turn BT off.
8) Phone - Turn BT on.
9) Truck - Hit "connect" on the MFT screen to reconnect BT.
10) Phone - Go into the BT Profile Settings screen for Sync (little arrow to the right of Sync, in Settings, Bluetooth)
11) Phone - Set Notifications to "On".
12) Phone - Back up a screen and turn BT off again.
13) Phone - Turn BT back on.
14) Truck - Hit "connect" on the MFT screen again to reconnect to phone.

Swilky2000, good info! I have a 2012 f150 and have tried everything under the sun to get text messaging to work! I have had my dealer upgrade my software to the latest version and have also spent the $$$ for the Nav software updates to no avail. But the 2012 sync/ nav combo withe the iphone5 seemed doomed to ever work. I do have show notifications showing up on my phone now that the dealer updated my software but no texting of any kind would work even after trying the pairing directions mentioned in this post. This morning, I saw Swilky's idea about having the show text notifications on a locked screen on the phone turned on. So I turned it on. Got in the truck repaired everything and still nothing!
About an hour later I was driving down the road and felt my phone vibrate to let me know a text came through. I then heard a weird tone out of my sync unit and saw a message to play/ download a text! I could not believe my eyes! I pulled over and almost passed out! Texting was working on my truck. I was able to play the text, view it and download them all! I tried sending one but it failed. For some reason it won't send anything, but at least I can receive and play them.
I have been researching and following the threads for 2012 sync/ nav NON-MFT for years now and this is the first time in over two years I have ever heard of anyone with a 2012 being able to view and play text messages!
Thank you Swilky!

I too have never tried to send one from the truck.
When it tells me "MESSAGE RECEIVED" I press the sync button on wheel and say "READ MESSAGE" and the truck sync lady will read the text through the speakers and show on the screen who it was from.

Glad it is working for you.

I think the problem with a lot of us is that Gen 1 Sync doesn't support reading text messages, no matter whether its upgraded, or not. That's my understanding, from reading up on it at the myfordsync website. I think you need Sync 3.5 or higher, which Gen 1 won't take.
