My reason for trying to build a cable that can do both is, when I'm in the truck, I want the display on... That's why I am putting in there.

So far I have failed at the Y cable... I'm going to continue trying, but my only other options are to:

1)Plug it up manually in glove box (as many of you are already doing)

2) Modify the sync unit to charge all the time instead of just when ignition is on... Not sure if this is even possible since everything is likely on circuit boards

To develop an app that could control the existing ac/heater & radio controls it would have to be extremely worthwhile and I'd need some help.

Not a project I would attempt, especially when you already have access to the ac controls. What little you would ever need to set a preset or set the clock you can simply open the glove box.. IMHO

I'm confused, so what would people need an app for then? I'm new here and am wanting to give back to the community somehow.

Just a thought from a guy that doesn't know what he's talking about. Why couldn't you have a small inverter hidden behind the dash and plug in a powered USB splitter? If this works, you could theoretically charge everything from your phone to your iPod, to your in-dash iPad. Then you could also control all of these things with your Sync.

I wish it were that easy. I have attempted the y cable with installing diodes to keep from back feeding the sync system and cannot get it to work.
Here is what I found:

Little Square Apple iPhone Charger Info
Red 5.125v
White 2.7v
Green 2.0v
1000 mA

Ford Sync USB Info
Red 5.07v
White 0.0v
Green 0.0v
500-450mA

iPad USB Charger Info
Red 5.1v
White 2.02v
Green 2.71v
2100 mA

Homemade Adapter Info
Red 5.04v
White2.66v
Green 1.93v
1500 mA

Seems that if you don't have the correct voltage on Data+/- (Red/White)
that the iPad will display not charging. Even thou the Homemade adapter was a little lower voltage because of traveling thru the diode, I feel it was still at an acceptable level.... but still didn't work. It charged, but sync wouldn't recognize it.

Hey, Ive been considering doing this or a nexus install, but the main thing that is leaning me towards the nexus is that it has an app called tasker which will turn it on and off when it gets power. Do you have anything like that for the ipad or do you know of anything like that?

lovely install by the way.

thanks
