I was interested in the iPad route, but after research and the cost of the iPad, I found it was more feasable to with the Google Nexus 7. My reason for this is the fact that the only iPad mini's that have GPS support are the ones that have a cellular antenna, the Nexus 7 has one in the basic wifi version and only costs $199. The iPad is roughly $450 to get GPS. I believe the Nexus 7 will fit in the same setup that is being proposed here.

you guys looking for a removable option like a fiberglass float mount, or more of a permanent thing?

The permanent ones in this size would be pretty easy to build compared to all the work it took to stuff the ipad 3 in my dash.. i ordered a ipad mini and some supplies to mock it up into a dash piece earlier.. we'll see how it all looks
