Default Intermittent Starting issue

I have a 2014 F 150 5.0 4x4. Sometimes when I start it, the starter engages but then stops and re-engages, clicks, and then eventually starts. I had the battery checked and it’s fine. I am thinking the starter is going bad but it looks like a pain to replace.
since it is intermittent, I am afraid if I take it in, they won’t find anything wrong and I’ll get a $150 bill and still have the problem.

Anyone have a similar problem with starter? What was the repair?

You're sure it's the starter clicking? What does "fine" mean for the battery, which kind of tester was used? Have you checked the starter cable and connections?

If it is the starter clicking, that's a good sign it has a problem. But, these modern batteries are tough to diagnose. They run at high power until they die, so many times the tests lie. And if the cable is damaged, the starter might be just fine. Of course, the cable costs about the same as a starter.

Replacing the starter isn't as bad as it is made out to be. You can actually get your hand up around the side of it to reach the bolts you can't see and feel to get them. I was even able to get my electronic torque wrench up there to get precise torque for the install instead of guessing in that awkward spot.

I tried pulling the starter. I got 2 of the three bolts out. I figured I had a 50/50 shot getting the top one out and a zero shot at getting it back in. So I put it back together. I’ll call the dealer tomorrow and have them do it.

You may have searched already.
I found this for the 2011 through 2014 Starter Replacement.
Seemed pretty good details were included.
Maybe it will help.
I have the 2011 myself, and I know I'll be doing this before long.

The starter is $165 at Rock auto. So im sure I paid $330 for the starter + $150 diagnosis + $285 for labor.
Im not complaining, I just can't work on stuff like I used to.

I really just posted it so those of you who are still able work on stuff yourself can see the value in it.
