Default Instrument Cluster (IC) Dealer Test Mode

Are you looking for a break from oil, bulb and transmission threads? Do you want to have some fun with your instrument cluster?

Here, try this, I found this tidbit in the 2009 F-150 Workshop Manual. Page 413-01-12 if you have the manual.

It is a way to run some self-tests on the cluster and see some readouts of gauges and of temps in the tranny, fuel stuff, fuel data, batt voltage, bulbs etc etc. You will like it. I have run it and it did not blow anything up. Some of the readouts will make sense and some won't because thy are in hexedecimal format.

My favorites were the gauge test (it makes a noise and all the needles go full right) and also the test of all the lights on the cluster.

To enter the IC dealer test mode:

- On the cluster, hold the SELECT/RESET button in
- Turn ignition switch to RUN (I think the second position)
- Hold SELECT/RESET button in for about 5 seconds until display says ENGINEERING TEST MODE
- Then press the button in to cycle thru all the stages of the self test.

To exit, just hold the button in for about 3 seconds or just turn ignition to OFF.

Enjoy. Thanks

I don't have a shop manual yet, so I appreciate these kinds of tips!

The '10s will do the gauge test every time you start it up. Like you I thought it was pretty cool.

I was starting to think there was something wrong with my new truck... Thanks for telling me that they're supposed to do that.

Thanks, Johnwill. I wondered if there were any tricks like this for the F150. On my 03 Hemi RAM there was an instrument cluster sequence like this one, and there was also another one that would give you all the codes the truck was throwing on the instrument cluster readout if the check engine light was on. That truck threw codes all the time. Is there a code readout sequence for the F150 instrument cluster?
