Is that directed at me or Baja Lobo? Because that is the first time I have said anything about a subject like this in my short history on this board.

I've never even heard of this authorized vender crap before. I've been ordering items over the internet for a decade and always went for the cheapest price and never had any problems.

Got_titan, thanks for order the wrinkle black intake. It is the one I wanted but needed to see a picture first to make sure. That will definitely be going on my truck.

lol. I was thinking the same thing. Then I started searching for more info about the Airaid intake also and found this thread.

I have some experience with buying from authorized vs. non-authorized vendors. From what I have seen, it really is a calculated risk. Buying from authorized vendors ensures better quality control and the backing of the manufacturer. It will also guarantee against buying a counterfeit or outdated part. I have found some really great deals on car stereo equipment from unauthorized retailers. I bought knowing that I could be getting old stock or counterfeit, but because I saved about 40%, I thought it was worth the risk. And I knew that a factory reject speaker or fake couldn't damage my other equipment, just give me poor sound. Personally, I wouldn't risk buying a part as important as the air intake system from an unauthorized retailer just to save about 10-15%, and risk potentially damaging my new truck without recourse from the manufacturer because I didn't follow their policy. The intake system could have a defective or counterfeit filter. The risk is not worth the reward in my opinion.

I'm new here and not trying to start a fight, just wanted to share my point of view from my experience. And my last Morrel speakers I bought that I saved some money on blew out. I had to buy another set from an authorized dealer this time. Ended up costing me a lot more in the end.

Seems now that we have people that work or have direct relationships with authorized vendors posting! LET PEOPLE BUY WHERE THEY WANT! This intake has NO moving parts, whats gonna tear up? I saved 25% which was 75 dollars and im happy I did!

I used to work for the largest US based distributor of aftermarket Toyota Supra parts and got this question and issue more times than I care to mention. I could go on for days about the risk vs. reward and about how one benefits could outweigh the other. However I'm not going to do that. I am just going to give one example of an issue with an intake came up and how buying from an authorized retailer really helped.

Keep in mind these are intakes for twin turbo inline 6 cylinder vehicles. So the heat and underhood temps can be comparable to those of ours.

It's been almost 8 years so I don't remember the exact manufacturer and if I did I wouldn't want to slander their name any more than it was or has, but with the twin turbos on this car being on the same side of the motor, most intakes were just a single pipe that fed both turbos further back in the system. This company made one with two individual pipes and two filters as well. There was a slight performance benefit over the other single pipe intakes, but it was more a cosmetic and underhood feature that most liked.

Within weeks of this intake being released, we, an authorized retailer, had sold close to 100 of these intakes. Within another few weeks we had people calling like crazy complaining the chrome finish was discoloring and even flaking off. The black powdercoat was doing the same thing as well. The manufacturer had simply just not paid attention to some QC issues and didn't use a good coating company. The manufacturer sent us all new intakes to replace our customers at no charge. They took the old ones back and had them recoated and sold them back to us at a discount as they were used intakes at that point.

I unfortunately also took phone calls from many people who had bought from somewhere else, but because of our customer service level, they hoped we could help them. We couldn't and unfortunately those people either had to have them recoated or buy a new one altogether. These were $450 dollar intakes from us and about $400 from those unauthorized companies. In the end they saved $50 bucks but them had to pay additional for coating or painting or a new intake altogether.

I won't preach about it, but the service is what you are paying for from an authorized dealer. They are required to sell items for no less than certain prices to keep their discount level with the manufacturer. The more they buy, the better the discount. The better customer service and forum and marketing presence they have, the more customers they have and the more they can order, thus potentially passing that discount on. Also keep in mind that just because they have to advertise it at a certain price by rule, doesn't mean they can't give it to you cheaper over the phone

I generally try to buy from authorized retailers myself just as a personal preference. There are some things that I take that risk and don't care who i buy from and just get the best deal I can find. Just be prepared you won't have any support from anyone if something goes wrong. If you are ok with that, then go for it!

Me personally, i don't think a manafacturer should be about to deny a warranty on a product just cause they don't like the vendor selling their product. Really, how stupid is that? It came from the same place the authorized vendors got there stock...Injen!

I completely agree with you... if it wasnt an intake and directly affected the motor, I wouldnt spend the more money on an "authorized" one. When it comes time for Ford to deny a claim and they find a way to blame the intake...I need that intake company to come through and warranty their crap

Good luck on that....if ford wants to deny the warranty its not gonna matter where it came from. If theres damage and ford blames it on the intake theres nothing injen or any authorized or non authorized vendor can say that will help.
