I hit a bat....
So yeah title kinda says it all, Some little kid and his mother in a parking lot pointed out to me I had a bat stuck in my grille, I was in a rush and didnt even believe what they were saying. Sure enough when I got home I look at the grille and there is a bat stuck in it, kinda crazy. Ill show pictures first the story gets better....
So I get home and see that, and I said wow I never even seen someone strike a bat with their car this might be facebook worthy so I upload it. My brother calls me minutes later to hurry and take it down the bat is a little brown bat heavily endangered in my area. I was like whatever and took it down, look into it some more there is only about 600(now 599) in my state and they are very protected. They aren't as rare in the world but the specific type in my state is rare from what I gathered.
So bottom line is I by accident killed something more protected then a bald eagle. Probably had better odds at winning the lottery while being hit by lightning. I felt bad for the little guy but I know he didn't suffer based on how he landed in the grille hit head landed right on the vertical spoke.
I am posting it here because this forum is obviously smaller then facebook and I didnt do anything wrong so if fish and wild life contacts me oh well.
Has anyone else hit a bat or anything like that with their truck?

Last weekend I hit a Cardinal Bird, and I live in STL! Think it helped, as the Cardinals won that afternoon...

Posting pictures of animals you did not intentionally hit with your car is not against the law. I do not know why you are so paranoid about it. Sucks that it is endangered and is now gone but stuff happens at times.

The Little Brown Bat is one of the most common bats in North America, including NJ. I think your brother was pulling your leg. While it is illegal to kill a bat, or any other animal that doesn't have a hunting season established, it is not an issue to accidentally hit one with your bat mobile. Nice pictures. You have to feel bad for the little sucker though, as it was probably chasing a bug and trying to get it before your truck did.
After posting that, I remembered reading about a bat disease. So after a quick search, I stand corrected. The white nosed syndrome is killing a lot of bats and populations have dropped by 90%, including the Little Brown Bat. Still not a crime to hit one accidentally, but their populations are in danger now.

I was doing about 70 on the freeway when a quail with eggs flew into my windshield, eggs being the key word. Made a mess of my truck, I pulled into a truck stop to wash it off and some of the employees came over to see what I had hit. They were cool about it and rinsed while I scrubbed.
