If you get the least mpg when the throttle is wide open, it must be the best mpg when the throttle is least open while idling, right? I wonder if the 5.0L folks get their tanks filled up if they idle long enough...

I generally start out on each tank being nice. Then some idiot won't let me over so I stand on it. Then I say, "well there goes that tank" and then I beat on it after that.

I tend to agree with you. The proof is that people say that they "baby it" and still can't get good mileage. This is the WRONG approach. It's not about accelerating slowly. This can actually hurt overall mileage. Maximizing coasting and driving in such a way that minimizes braking will work wonders for mileage. "Babying" the accelerator won't. I get fantastic mileage and accelerate rather briskly (wouldn't want condensate to build up in the intercooler ).

I'm pretty positive that the mpg you get when idling at a stop light is zero!

I get Zero Point Zero in every vehicle I own.
Your absolutely correct, but I should have stated my statement in a better way. This truck uses a ton of fuel while idling, I think it as almost as much as it does as some speeds and gearing. It acts like it has a load on it more so than most vehicles I have driven. Some one with a scan gauge could probably check for what the fuel flow on these is at idle. So yes all cars get 0 mpg, if it is sitting still, but your average fuel economy can be brought way way down on this truck if lets say you leave it idling for 5 minutes to cool/heat the cab for instance. It will wipe any potential gains you might have by driving softly just with a few minutes of idling, easily for your entire tank.

These trucks could easily benefit from BMW's auto start stop technology. But god it will drive you nuts if your not used to it.

Just so you know, jknight, sterlingone bought his current truck in western PA. But I still agree with you. No synchronized traffic lights here in PA. I take that back, they are synchronized to stop traffic. Traffic lights on main roads are set up to give people entering from secondary side streets priority, and they stay red much longer than necessary. Stop signs are frequently located at the bottom of hills. Traffic lights are usually the top of the hill so that you don't get the coasting momentum needed. One traffic light nearby, I often have to sit through it two and sometimes 3 complete cycles before I get through it. I live in the suburbs, not the city. I stay away from the malls, too. You aren't going to get anywhere near that kind of mileage where I live. And I know my truck is capable, because I can get that kind of mileage in Florida around the Gainesville area.
