Based on my experience, any MPG increase you will see will be determined by how your drove BEFORE the programmer and custom tunes.

Right now I'm averaging 17.36 MPG (calculated) over the first 11,824 miles. This works out to $.149/mile (average of $2.59/gallon).

When I add the programmer to my 09, I will be shocked if I see 18.1 MPG. It may increase my towing MPG, but I only tow 150-180 miles per month.

We'll see...Believe me, I'm hoping too, but I'm not going to try and convince myself into believing I'm adding a programmer and tunes to save gas and pay for itself.

If your already getting 17mpg then you should be ecstatic! Am I to assume you have a 4.6? because I have a 5.4 Fx4 with heavy duty towing package, brake controller etc etc and I have only seen 16mpg average and that was 350miles of highway on a 475mile tank of gas fill up. usually my #'s are 14.5 (always hand calculated, dont trust the electronic)

Thanks Gary.

I do appreciate the dyno sheet (I'll add it to my files), but you just gotta love marketing.

MAX gains are indeed 35 hp and 42 ft-lbs (4400 RPM), but...

1. Per your chart, the real MAX gain (over maximums) is only 26 hp and 27 ft-lbs of torque. It's just the maximums occur at different RPMs.
2. What's the sheet look like under 2000 RPMs? Most people looking for fuel economy are not going to operate at 3000+ RPMs.

What gear ratio did the truck have?

Do you have any evidence/proof other than reports from people that have already spent the money on your product? Or any testing data?

  • Yes, you are correct. We advertise the maximum gain, which is pretty much what all the tuning companies do. That number is different from the gain at PEAK HP and TQ. You’ll notice the torque gains are at all RPM points, not just at “peak”. We don’t try to hide it; it’s all right there in the dyno chart.
  • Correct again. Most people don’t drive their truck above 3000 RPMs. The torque gains from 2200 to 2500 extend all the way down to right off idle, and will be noticeable under normal, part throttle driving. The additional power we gain at wide open throttle, which the dyno chart measures, is blended in to the tuning at part throttle as well.

I believe the truck we tested had a 3.55 gear. I’ll have to double check our info to verify.

We cull our fuel mileage information based on beta test reports and customer testimonials. We do not require customers to provide us with logs or receipts when making fuel mileage claims. To be fair, we’ve had customers tell us that they saw NO difference in fuel mileage with our tuning, but typically they admit to driving the vehicle differently than they did when tuned stock. It’s that “seat of the pants” thing that gets most of us who like driving our vehicles. We do extensive beta testing, and our own in-house testing before releasing our tuning, and most of those tests show an average gain with Hypertech tuning in the 1 to 2 MPG range.

It is hard to get accurate, repeatable data to use for advertising for fuel mileage gains. We have tested other vehicles with our tuning at independent laboratories that have the capability to do OE type EPA drive cycle testing, with successful results. This is really the only method that can get closest to measuring fuel mileage gains without errors from outside influences. Unfortunately, those tests are quite expensive. The costs to test every vehicle and engine configuration are just too great for most aftermarket companies to undertake. So we have to rely on customer testimonials for advertising purposes.

The best test is to try it in YOUR vehicle, with your driving style, and in your climate and terrain. That is why we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. You can try out our tuning, and if you’re not satisfied, return it to the dealer you purchased it from for a refund. We’ll take them back from our dealers, no questions asked, as long as the vehicle has been programmed back to stock.
Thanks, Gary @Hypertech

look... are we racing these big heavy slow f150s we have? please stop hating on hypertech max energy because it is actually pretty good... i just got this on my 2010 harley and on premium settings, raising the rev limiter and upping the shift firmness.. its a huge difference... I had a 2007 bmw 335i twin turbo and went through the custom tunes and all that yea its cool you can get extra horsepower... but you are putting your engine at way bigger risk... and these are slow F150s we are talking about... hypertech max energy is safe and gives you a pretty good gain and once you install it you dont have to worry about it... you dont want to get a custom tune to get 15 extra hp and then something mess up and your dealer will say too bad fool thats what happens... so unless it matters so much that you can finally beat your friends stock tundra after putting a bunch of mods in your ford... then chill out about the "hyperjunk"... it works, its safe and easy... no worries with it... if you have a twin turbo sports car then you may have a reason to get a custom tune.... so if you are wondering if hypertech max energy gives good gains on 09-10.. then yes.. very good actually.. i was surprised
