I then figured out what pins from my existing connector/harness needed to be brought over, and removed the rest from the connector that was attached to the board. I soldered wires to the pins I kept and put them in the correct location to match up with what was on the existing connector. (eg., if pin 4 had a wire in it on the existing APIM male connector, I populated pin 4 on the female connector.)

This is interesting and I have always wondered about this. My question is, can the pins in the connector you pulled from the donor module be replaced with crimped pins instead of soldering? Also, I see Tyco branding on the connector itself, is there a part number for the connector on there? Maybe the connector could be found on a site like Mouser rather than buying a donor module. Just curious.

The male plug side is made up of 3 parts - two rows, and the shroud. All 3 can be had for about $10.00 before shipping, however without the female side it makes creating the harness kind of a pain, unless you were sure you wanted to scrap your own 4.2" APIM to get the female connector, since that goes unused when you do the swap.
I've got an email into Mouser to see if they have pins that will fit in to the female side that can be crimped instead of soldering to the pins that are there.

I have a '12 with the Sync wtih voice activated nav (the one that's currently completely friggen broken as of the last update and works... when it wants to)
Can't wait to see how this works out and if its feasible.

You do need a separate GPS antenna with a blue fakra connector for Sync 3, I got one on ebay for about $12 and put it next to the GPRS module under the dash.

Initial findings is that Sync 3 works fine using the same pin swaps I have in the OP. I found an 2016 XLT to get AsBuilt data from and applied it this morning, everything looks to be working except for a couple of little quirks that I'll mess with today if I get some time.

Oh bad ***.... The ONLY thing I dislike about my truck is the lack of support and the buggines of Sync with Voice activated nav (Sync1)....
I'd gladly do the upgrade.

OEM radio solutions makes a conversion harness. He did it for the Mustang but it sounds like a universal PNP harness. I would assume it would work for the F150 as well. Maybe an option if the harness work is holding anyone back. The only downside is he said he is overwhelmed so it may take awhile.
