Go through a buying program like Costco, USAA Ins., or Consumer Reports. I got 3 quotes via USAA from dealers 130 to 225 miles away, printed them off and took them to my dealer. After they gave me an offer on my trade, I told them what I wanted and that they needed to match the offers to get my business. I can't say they were happy, but so what. I used Ford Credit to get $1000 off and 6% for 60 months at $525/mon. After two payments I did a refi through USAA for 4.75% and $465/mon. Got a better offer from another credit union, called USAA and they dropped me to 4% at $406/mon. for the balance of the loan.
I let my dealer make a couple of too high offers before I told them my offer of $3000 less than that, so a little homework goes a long way.

4500 a month in car payments "/

4500 a mo invested for 30 years @ 8% return would be $6.6m. You must love your toys!

no! I got a loaded SCREW 2014 4x4 XLT w off road, hid, leather, towing, etc. for $35,600

www.duvalford.com Jax, Florida

Don't know if it's okay to list dealers, but I used to work there when I was younger and they're a solid dealer. They are a unit/volume dealer and list great prices right up front. Just use your pencil in finance and you'll be ok!

4% is high. You should be able to beat that. I am at 2% right now and have seen rates in the 1.49-1.79% range lately at various credit unions.

I paid $29k for my new 2014 STX 4x4 Scab about 3 months ago. I bought aftermarket custom made front and rear floor mats with mud trapping for $175, a new Ford OEM bed liner in new condition of a guy on Craigslist for $50 and a like new Ford OEM folding bed extender for $125 shipped on eBay and received and installed it yesterday. It was in perfect shape. Ford prices. Floor mats - $100 I paid $175 for a better set. Bed liner - $285 I paid $50 for the same OEM one on CL Bed extender - $365 I paid $125 on eBay for the same OEM one. Shows you don't have to have a lot of extra stuff on the truck that you'll pay 4 times more for plus the added cost of the financing of it.

Anyone stupid enough to agree to that is just, well, stupid.

I always go in looking for the best payment I can get, but you have to remember that some of us are not idiots, we just have a different way of doing things than others. I went in payment shopping for my current truck, and walked out a hair over $10k off sticker on a RCSB. And just so it is clear, I went in looking specifically for a RCSB. Its not something I settled on because of a payment, I looked for one at about 6 different dealers online before I ended up at my local dealer, who had the others beat by a few thousand on advertised price, which was still more than I paid. Part of payment shopping is knowing what goes into making that payment. I have a number I won't go over for a monthly note, a number I won't go under for my trade, and a loan term I won't go over. If all are met, I buy.

Car dealerships, like any other business, are in the business of making money. As long as what I want is met, I'm not going to nickel and dime them to death trying to squeeze every last penny I can out of the vehicle price. If they can't meet my requirements, I go home. I also get a new car every couple of years, so paying one off is a rarity for me, which is why I look for the lowest payment I can get.
