How much help will all-terrain tires be on 2WD?

How much help will all-terrain tires be on 2WD?
2013 XLT with 2WD and locking rear differential. City slicker Michelin tires. I don't intend to off-road, but I do travel a dirt road that gets pretty messy sometimes. I've gotten stuck a couple of times. Are some good all-terrain tires going to help much, or is it time to trade in for a 4WD?

I ran Terra Grapplers (305-55-20) on my 2011 FX2 for years and they worked pretty well in mud and soft sand.
Did get stuck once in a while but not nearly as much as before the Grapplers.

Sometime encounter 6" of wet Alabama red clay mud that I'm able to plow through if I keep moving. The problem is often when I have to stop and it doesn't seem to be deep mud, but rather that it is so slippery that the tires start spinning when I try to get moving from a dead stop. It goes downhill from there!

Do what I did and pocket the extra cash, rather than buying up to 4wd. My 2wd slightly modified.
Rough Country hidden winch mount and a 12k Badland. I also have a 4" lift and Cooper at3's. I traveled Alabama dirt roads for 11 years so I know what your talking about, and there's usually a few good trees along the way to hook onto if you get stuck.

I hear you on that! I have the garbage LTX M/S2's with 7/32nds tread left (265/60R18) and they SUCK! Slipping and sliding in the rain, and I just park it when it snows. Yeah I have a 2wd, but even with 180lbs of sandbags in the bed I can't go anywhere! I'm debating on either the AT3's or Dynapro ATM's in a 275/65 or 275/70 as long as they'll fit without a lift or level.
