How many miles past "0 Miles to Empty"
Just wondering who has been brave enough to go close to empty and how far past "0 miles to Empty" did you go?!
Is the readout accurate or did Ford build in a few miles past E?
I usually get fuel at 1/4 to 1/2 empty so I havent been near E yet....

Based on tank size and countless mileage calculations I have found the following.
My 2007 Mazda 3 gets about 32-35 MPG average (bought new)
--When my light comes on and I have filled it up within 1-5 miles, I take 12.4-12.6 gallons (14.5 gal tank) EVERY time. I figure I can go 60 more miles safely when that light comes on and when it does I set up trip meter back to zero and know when I need to fill up. I usually do within 10 miles or so, it will depend if I am on my way to work and fill up then or on the way home. The most I have ever gone, once that happened, was 40 miles. When I did that I took 13.3 gallons.
-My 2010 Grand Caravan I have used the same technique on. When my light comes on it, and I have filled up within 1-5 miles, I have always needed 17.8-18.0 gallons in a 20 gallon tank. I get 17/25mpg on that religiously and wouldn't ever go more than 20/30 accordingly.
-My 2013 Screw/4x4/5.0 with 36gallong tank gets 13.5-14.5 no matter what. When my light has come on, and I filled up within 1-5 miles I always have needed 33.8-34.1 gallons.
Based on what seems to be a common theme through all my vehicles, from different manufactures, there is a 2 gallon reserve. I would never go more than about 10 miles on my truck once the light goes on and have only not filled up immediately 2 times. Once I went about 20 miles and it took 34.8 the other time I filled up within about 10 miles. More times than not I fill this one up around 1/4 tank.
I base my "light" encounters on the overall mileage of the vehicle. My car I pretty much use the light to fill up (I know how many miles I can get on a tank from experience). My van I hit the light about 5% of the time an the primary fill spot is 1/4 tank. On the truck I do about the same as the van.

But you get better mileage when you have less fuel

In the US they are designed to go on with roughly 2 gallons remaining so that you can safely get to a gas station. In Europe (from what I saw on a TV show) they like the light to mean Empty. So if u see the light you are SOL.

I have noticed on my last two Ford trucks that when the tank gets low, and says you have say twenty miles to empty, that you cannot go twenty miles as the miles to empty starts to drop faster and faster even if you feather peddle and try and stretch the fuel by driving conservatively. This may be due to the shape of the gas tank.
On several BMW's I have owned the calculations to empty were much more accurate.
