Default How to change 5.0 oil?

Sounds like a stupid question...

I know how to change oil but yesterday I was looking at the oil filter and noticed that is sits horizontal... I have never changed a filter that sits that way.

From the way it looks I would be afraid that when I unscrewd the filter, oil would go every where...Are there any special tricks to keep the oil from spilling out?

yea...have TWO cans to catch the oil. There is a pan that catches the oil and routes it to the front, then as the oil starts to drip, the ramaining oil will go to the back. IT surprised me the first time and I had a little cleanup, the next times I was prepared. It's only the oil thats in the filter, so it's no big deal, but still a pain.

I will assume you do still know to do the pan first?

I have a 2010 4.6, and I just changed my oil a few days ago. This was the first time I did it myself. On the 4.6, the filter sits horizontally as well, and you can clearly see the drain pan you speak of. However, for some reason when I unscrewed mine, not a single drop of oil went on that pan, it all ran down the back and on to the ground. Was kind of frustrating, because I had my pan placed to catch the oil from the pan on the truck, but I had to hurry and slide it back while trying to get the filter out upright.

Lol come on guys... It's just oil it won't bite you. It is kind of a pain sometimes but if you put a trash bag under your truck during the change any spills aren't a problem. You should try changing oil on a semi or any heavy equipment, you will begin to enjoy your trucks oil change.

I'm not complaining, it was just something unexpected that happened, and I felt mentioning it. Honestly, I could care less about oil spills though, as we keep oil dri stocked up in the shop.

I was waiting for someone else to say this! When you have a tractor that takes 44 quarts of oil and a tank for used oil then you can complain

Yea the oil filters could have a better place but I'm sure they did what they could.

Hah yeah some equipment takes more oil than most cars gas tanks will hold. Kinda expensive too. I saw a guy covered from head to toe in carbon and oil because he rebuilt a old Detroit engine without pulling the block. He was a mess.

We just have bulk tanks for tranny, engine oil and used oil which we burn in the shop during winter. It sure gets expensive fast
And now we've derailed the thread
