Default How good is the 4.6l, 3v engine and the 6 speed transmissionsin the 2010s?

Hello everyone! I hope this is ok to ask here and the way I'm asking it.
I am wondering how good of a reputation the 4.6l engine in my 2010 Supercab XLT has? Are they generally GOOD engines?
I am new to Ford's and my new to me truck has 150,000 miles on the clock. I am hoping it will last at least 50k more. Is that a REASONABLE expectation? Also, how about the TRANSMISSION in these trucks?
Are the problematic or generally ok?
I am just looking for OPINIONS, good or bad.
Also, If anyone wants to chime in on what kind of deal you think I got on my truck I wouldn't mind?
I paid $3,500. The Interior is in excellent condition, the truck does have some rust on rear quarters(That has been repaired) and the rockers are pretty much toast but the truck starts, runs, and drives great. Nice and smooth. Goes down the road straight.
Everything works. No known issues after me owning it for 7 months now. I did attach a few pics.
Again, I am just curious how I did on my purchase. I hope this is allowed here and in this format. If not, I will be more careful where and how I post in the future. I am new here and DEFINITELY still learning.

I must say I have found a ton of good topics and very useful information here so I thank you all for all your knowledge. I see lots of great FORD FOLKS here that I really hope to learn a lot from. I really don't know much at all about the history of these trucks, the engines, trannys, etc. and I REALLY need to learn!

Thank YOU all 🙏 in advance for any Help and information you can give me.
Have a great day!!

Great engine, strong transmission. For 3500 you did well. Seems to me that your average new car payment is more than 500 bucks a month, so if you have something going from A-B and that you like driving, and it costs you less than that, you are ahead of the game. Vehicles aren’t investments. Put the money you save in your 401k instead.

nice truck.

Yeah $3500 sounds like a steal. Was it discounted due to the rocker arms?

Why do you think the rockers are toast? This 4.6 technically doesn't have rocker arms but a roller follower/lash adjuster system. It makes a constant ticking noise when the roller followers fail, and you should absolutely not sleep on this. It will chew into your camshaft and eventually the valve will drop. Then you're looking at a new engine.

With your version of the 4.6, you're going to have timing/phaser/chain issues someday. It would be a good idea to go through youtube and familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms. Search 5.4l timing fordtechmakuloco -- your engine will produce the same symptoms and the 5.4 is more common. I have a suspicion you have this problem already and have misdiagnosed it as the rocker arms.

Unless you know when the fluids were last changed, I'd replace the trans, front and rear diff, and transfer case fluids. The 6-sp is a great transmission, but it has a common failure point with the coolant lines breaking free during normal driving. Fordtechmakuloco recommends changing those (it's not terribly difficult).

That's where I would start. Run it with 5w-30, keep it well maintained, and you have a good shot at making it to 300k or beyond.

I think he meant rocker panels not rocker arms. I don't see any rusted rocker panels but maybe it's just the angle.
Overall it looks great.
I bought some Eastwood Internal frame coating and sprayed that in the rockers of my 2014. I put new tape over the holes/openings to seal them up and keep dirt out. It may be helping but it's hard to say. I also used this same stuff inside my frame so the frame will be less likely to rust from the inside out. The price per can has gone up a little since I bought mine but it's still cheaper than rockers or a new frame.

It's because the rockers are gone. Look at the profile picture and look under the doors - you see some white, some rust, and a lot of black where there should be white rockers. Supercabs are super susceptible to rusty rockers and if they get bad enough, you'll start having issues with door closing and sealing.

The rear wheel arches look rough, like maybe someone sanded down the rust, slapped a bunch of bondo on, and resprayed it quickly. There's rust over the front wheel arches as well. Once rust starts, unless it's thoroughly and completely eliminated, it's only a matter of time. If the truck does what you need it to do, it was a good deal, but it's not something you're going to be passing down to your grandkids.

Yeah, that's what you put on the truck right before selling it so the buyer can't tell it's rusty. If you want to keep the truck for more than a few years you have to fix it for real.

Thank you for the answers!
I'm not looking at my truck as an investment, just was wondering how I did.
I look at it the same way. Less than a year of payments for it and it IS my DAILY DRIVER. And I LOVE this truck. It is so roomy and comfortable. Very happy with it.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate your thoughts on the engine and transmission.
Thanks!!

Thank you SO MUCH for all that information. I WILL look up the cam phasers issues you mentioned but as posted below, I was referring to the RUSTED ROCKER PANELS. SORRY I wasn't more clear.
I really appreciate your advice and suggestions, I will definitely look into those issues and I am planning on getting all those fluids replaced in 2 weeks. I already did oil and filter. The engine runs great. So far, so good.
Thank YOU so much for taking the time to reply.👍

Thank YOU very much for mentioning the ROCKER PANELS. That IS what I meant. I am planning on getting the kits they have and putting them on it and I have read about that spray for the rust. Obviously I will have to try that or similar to try to keep the rust at bay. The rocket panels are the worst, the rear quarters had a little above the wheels but I had that fixed already. Also, I THANK YOU for taking the time to reply and help a guy out. I am still learning. I have a long way to go but I WILL keep it until the wheels fall off (like I do most of my vehicles) but I DO all maintenance and repairs at the first sign of any issues. Therefore, I hope it treats me right. I definitely LOVE the truck for sure. My first truck and first Ford in like 25 years but very happy so far.(been 7 months already).
THANK YOU for the reply!🙏
